Disclaimer: Not hating on 285’s, just lots of R&D and have owned a few tacos.

255’s have way more availability in a 17” wheel which is the main reason I switched. 255/75/17 is 32”. 255/85/16 is 33” and heavier by 10-15lbs/tire on average.

255 is not too skinny for these trucks, in fact they are ideal. 285’s May look “cool” for whatever that is worth, but functionally 255 is far better in almost all aspects (except thick deep mud) for these mid size trucks. My neighbor is sponsored by Falken, Warne, CVT, and a few others and he swears the 255’s are better for daily driving and off-roading if you aren’t mudding.

There is some serious things to consider when thinking width.

    - the wider the heavier and more friction which equals less mpgs if you care
    - less power due to more rolling weight
    - less grip and steering on ice. More direct pressure is applied over a less wide surface with 255 vs 285. Think about an ice skate.
    - for steering and directional control 255 performs better than 285

This isn’t just opinion, but actual use of both sizes. I’m a utility type of guy, not a looks cool mall crawler.

Now that being said. If you run ALOT of weight a wider tire may help disperse that large weight better when turning at speeds so the vehicle may handle better. This depends on things like armor as well.

    Hope this helps

Yeah I went for the 255 for functionality. I live in Colorado and work outdoors and spend a lot of time driving. I was worried that with such a light truck that if I went with a 285 then I would regret winter and spring driving. I did a 2" lift all the way and SPC UCAs. The only rub that I have is on the driver side when at half turn going into my inclined driveway. I think I might go back in to where I got the work done and see if they can push the tires just a bit more forward. When I look at them they don't look quite centered in the wheel well. I am sure once I get that done I will not be rubbing anymore.

That would be your caster. Try to aim for 3-4 degrees

I wish but I already had them on before I got to know Jason and yes they’re 600’s and not sure on the preload to be honest I just had them done at a local shop. If I were to guess about 1.5-2 and how do we know you don’t have my set up? :duel:;)
I will tell you another thing I’ll bet we both wish we would’ve waited?? have you seen the Close out sale they’re having?? Lol I’m thinking of getting another just for a spare or two.

@Montauk17 they do pretty damn good in the mud though don't they. Post some pics. Great third gen with 255/80/17's St Maxx

You're sort of at both extremes there. Something with 4.5 backspace is the sweet spot. You're going to have issues with 3.5 and 5.

Ok I know I have a 2nd gen but just about the perfect wheels fit wise, for 255/80/17's, are first gen Tundra or Sequoia wheels. I believe they are 17x 7.5 with a 4.5" back space.

Not so easy to find though

They do. More for me it’s snow. Some people think you want to “float” on snow with wider tires, but the reality is you want to dig in snow and take full advantage of the sidewalk lugs.

Not to mention if you check out the Toyota vehicles they use in Australia and Africa, almost all of them use skinnier tires for the Offroad capability

I agree with you. This was a large debate in the skinny tire thread. I have had both now skinny and fat up to 15.5" wide and I can tell you I like the skinnies much better for pretty much all conditions other than looks
