I agree with you. This was a large debate in the skinny tire thread. I have had both now skinny and fat up to 15.5" wide and I can tell you I like the skinnies much better for pretty much all conditions other than looks

Here is a pic of my skinny 33"s kicking ass climbing a steep, loose shale hill with mud moguls at the top. No problem for these tires and a rear locker. 482A83E1-B96A-4AE0-BFF3-F1B71009C538.jpg

Total chaos UCA and fox 2.5 coil over with 2" of lift roughly.

Had to do a body mount cut, beat pinch weld and cut plastic.

Any rub with the 2" lift and still running stock mud flaps?
    Truck/wheels look great!

Haha TY i built that with all the leftover lumber when they were building all the houses around me on my street. Of course with permission from the builder.

When I go into the driveway which is on an incline it can hear it barely touch the mud flap that is the only rub I have and it's pretty quiet.

Falken Wildpeak ATIII (285/75/16) needed a 1/4" spacer on the stock alloys because they were biting the UCA's. Cheap fix - Alaska likes the wider tire otherwise I would've went skinny.

I really want to go skinnies, but cant find anything under 58 lbs. Well the Dick Cepek is 48, but havent heard great things about those tires. How rough is the ride with the Load E? I have 16's, and yes, after looking into skinnies I wish I would have gotten 17's.

Thing is you probably are only going to find MTs in a skinny 16. MTs are just a bummer on pavement. Are you lifted? If so, I would go 285/75/16 with BFG TA KO2. You won't be dissapointed and the really are a great size. You wont need to trim that much plastic off the stock bumper. Get your alignement guy to center the front tire, for no rubbing and your done.

Not lifted, just have a stock PRO. Was thinking about 285/75. Some people said they can fit those stock on a Pro with no rubbing (very controversial subject,) but I figure trimming and some heat gun work at the minimum, maybe a CMC would be necessary but dont think so. I am going to stay with the stock suspension though. Def don't want to go MT, so I will consider the Ko2. Thanks for the advice.

Nice Truck! The PROs are super dialed. They are lifted 1", so I bet your good. I did not do the CMC, just Demello Baja front and Toytec 2.5" Boss. They are a great ride. One thing you can consider is D rating tire vs E rating. I have found the E rating is great for off road trips when I air down, as it seems to hold its shape, prolly the side wall being more reinforced. But the D rating I found sits just a smidge lower, and drives like butter. Now with that said, I wanted more lift, so I went back to e rated. I kind of have OCD with tires and still have a set of 295s I am thinking of keeping for wheeling and currently running 285s E rated for DD.

Yeah trying to find a D rating for sure. I am hoping to get something closer to 50 lbs rather than 60. I noticed the Cooper AT3 XLT's are only 54 lbs and are actually 32.6" vs a lot of the others (Ko2's) that are closer to 60 lbs and a true 33". I think those are at the top of my list if I cant find a lower load rating. Toyo makes a C rated in the Open Country C/T, but it still weighs 61 lbs so not going that route. The hunt goes on... haha

I like those Cooper AT3 XLTs a lot. Overland Journal did a AT3 review a while ago, might not be the XLT, cause I think those are newer, but the AT3 is a solid choice! I almost purchased those last time.

Do NOT go 255s, OP. 255s are for guys that just want to say “I have 33’s” without actual commitment. At minimum do 285s. True 33s are 12.5” wide not a wimpy 10” tire.

You wanna make excuses, get 255s. You want maximum traction off-roading get you 285s+

Haha that's funny. The actual tire will make a bigger difference in traction than the width of the tire. And depending on what your driving through, a “skinner” might even be better. In snow & mud for instance, you don’t want to go over it you actually want do go down through it if possible to hit a harder surface. I use to run 285’s but have much better luck where I live and drive through using a 33/10.5. The tire is also a better fit for the Tacomas as the 285's I was previous running felt like too much tire for the rig. Made the steering and handling feel sluggish. Couldn’t be happier running a 33/10.5. I can air these down and go anywhere I did with the 285. And it’s all about where and what your going to be doing with your truck. To just say you have to have a 285 or larger tire or your wasting your time is just being ignorant. I've ran four different sizes and five different tires in just the last two years so I'm speaking from experience. You obviously don’t have any experience running a 33/10.5 tire and haven’t tried too many tire designs to know that size isn’t always what matters LOL

Size matters. Sorry they have lied to you and you drank the coolaid. If you are happy with those wimpy tires, by all means enjoy them. But to be honest they look gross and most certainly do not out out perform 285+ tires in getting traction off-road.

255/80r17 on 17x8 +15 offset. Stock suspension and front mud flaps removed. No rubbing on daily driving. Haven't had a chance to do anything that would flex it off road yet.
