Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Pretty much. "Up" only fixes so much. The wheels are round therefore turning becomes the issue. You have to push OUT further to clear with flex+turn.

OUT causes significant problems and is the problem with 285s. The farther the outside of the tire is moved away from the hub, the larger the arc it describes while turning, and the more it rubs. That's why 255/85-16s on stock backspaced wheels with no lift have fewer clearance problems than 285s even though most 255s have a slightly larger diameter. Unfortunately going out is necessary with 285s otherwise they won't clear the knuckle and UCA.

You don't rub with fender flares.

    Discussion over.

With the proper trimming, it's possible to run 285's with as little as 2" of lift. That takes the right wheels, the right tires, the right trimming, and a little luck. If you ever take the truck off road, or drive normally on "average roads", "trimming" will include a cab mount chop. Anyone who tells you otherwise either hasn't left the mall parking lot, they're kidding themselves, or they're kidding YOU.

Lifts of as much as 3" will help somewhat, but the rub points don't move and the wheel travel when suspension is stuffed is still an issue.

As mentioned, the right wheels OR wheel spacers will help somewhat, but at the same time can HURT the situation. Where you gain clearance in one spot, you lose it in another. Some 285's are a tad bit smaller that others. (Only by a VERY small bit) While researching for a tire purchase I'm about to pop on, I've found 285's that range from 32.4" to 33.2" inflated height. And height is only a part of the picture. Section width plays a huge part in where/if a tire will rub. The wider the tire, the more likely it will rub when you're at or near full lock turn.

Then there's that small detail where it seems just about every truck is different.....Alignment plays a roll in where the wheel sits in relation to fender opening. Aftermarket suspension pieces create variables. Some favorable, some not so much....

Bottom line, put 285's on a Tacoma, even with 3" lifts, and it's a 99.99% likelihood a tire will meet with metal/plastic in an unfavorable manner under routine driving conditions. You will be cutting on the truck.

    Too few to list.
I fitted 285/70R17 Duractracs on 1.75" lift with 5100's for a week until I got my OME885x. They do fit with minimal rubbing but plastics were already cut and I was running Light Racing UCA's with a +3 caster.

All good points. I've ran 285 Duratracs on OME 885x with +3 caster setting on LR UCA's as well as 4.5" backspaced wheels and regular road driving = no rubs. Off-road slight rub on the cab mounts and some plastic depending on position although my CV boots were happy with just the 885x and only with the lean 1/4" spacer as they have about 1mm space before touching.

Yeah, it was a woefully blanket statement.
