It’s that time again, time to buy some new tread for the taco! I’m running 255/80/17 cooper st maxx at the moment. Setup has been great as far as performance and tread life, skinnies just aren’t cutting it for me on the trails I’m doing. I’m thinking about playing it safe again and going to a 285/75/17 and just trim back a bit more or nutting the fuck up and just go big with 315/75/16. Tire choice is going to be either st maxx again or stt pro. Not concerned with mpg, already average 15-16 daily. Only thing holding me back on going 35’s is all the weight I already have on my truck, steel bumpers front and rear, and full steel skids with the exception of the aluminum TRD skid. Thinking it may be a bit too much daily wise before I put my 4.88’s in, which won’t happen for at least another 3 months. Hence the reason I was thinking about still upgrading to a 34 but playing it safe without compromising the daily commute too much. What’s every one think? 0C511E0E-4D16-422D-B26C-4907B95B5DE7.jpgCDA55DFF-CAED-4540-9AA4-6912CC870E58.jpg ED2FC73B-7086-48FF-975E-FF8D78B40898.jpg

I can’t say anything based on experience, but I’ve looked into 285/75r17 as well. Seem like a good balance between bigger offroad width/height and being a little lighter hen true 35’s for a DD, especially if you aren’t regeared.

Subbed for others input as well.

Something to consider is in a 285 most options are only gonna be a10ply where as 315 are mostly 8ply so weight is not as different as you would think

If your only gonna be 3 months with out 4.88's Id jump up to 315's if your seriously considering them.. @mesojdm.. Ran his 315's for a while before re gearing.. plus when you do regear all you'll think about is how you should have gone 315's

Curious about the trails you are on requiring more than a 255, yet you say performance is great. ??

Are you now running in sugar sand or something that a little more surface might help?

I need more contact patch, mainly a lot of rocks down here in Texas. Skinnies do amazing just not exactly the tire I need for what I’m wheeling on. Not the best example of what I’m trying to show but you get the picture. 304DFB70-4299-4EB8-A7B7-8469878DD727.jpg

If you’re jumping up to 4.88 anyways then just nut up and go 35s. If you weren’t then I’d suggest 34s.

Going from 255 to anything with width is fun. I just jumped from 255 to 295 and it’s amazing. Truck looks so much better.

Dude, you're already going hard. I say just get the 35's. Its probably too much tire for the stock gears, but you plan to change that anyway. I say just go for it.

Just put 35's on it already. If you are AT you will definitely need to regear, if you are MT, you'll be fine. I'm running 4.88's in mine and wish I had 4.56's but they don't make them for the 8.7 diff so I guess I'm gonna have to run 37's when these wear out.

Secondly, are you still on stock suspension? If so, you are not fitting 34's or 35's. Can't really tell but your pic in the OP looks like you are on stock shocks. You are gonna need UCA's also. Lot's of caster required to fit 35's

Badass man, dam those looks great! Your on another level I’ve seen what all you have done to your truck great job. 35’s are my limit personally, but I know your SAS at some point so..:luvya:

OME suspension all around, OME struts paired with 887 coils, SPC LR UCA’s, Cs097R Dakar leafs in the rear. Got a lot of cutting to do this weekend then. :sawzall:911FD32D-9423-4877-AE98-3E4F269C9E7F.jpg

    Hah no

Yeah yeah your right. Just playing the cautious side of things. I may end up just waiting till I get closer to regearing. I just don’t want to tear up the rear end prematurely if I don’t have to. I have a Toyota offroading event I’m going to in about 20 days and I plan on pushing my truck harder than I did last year so there’s that too.

These are both solid choices! Dead set on the STT pros though. Think I’m going to do a 305/75/16...

Yea yea, this is all functionality though I swear... Thanks appreciate it!

3” full OME suspension Front OME 90021 struts paired with 887 coils, SPC LR UCA’s, Rear nitrocharger shocks with Cs097R heavy Dakar leafs overload left on. Nothing fancy gets the job done and takes a hell of a beating. Plan on upgrading to a decent mid travel setup in a couple years probably. Mid travel is probably as crazy as I’ll go for what I do with mine.
