An Oil Filter Mess

Doing my second oil change in 4 weeks today, these long drives are killing me, my question is do any of you have a method for removing the damn thing without making a major mess, this time around I just grabed a bunch of rags and wraped them around the filter as I unscrewed it to catch most of the oil that spilled out but still made a mess, anyone got any advice for me??

Just put a cup under the drain hole. Hold the filter there for a minute after you unscrew it and let it drain. I do this and never have a drop spill.

A 1 liter bottle with the neck/spout chopped off makes a good catch can. It'll sit right on the belt and it's still tall enough to catch what ever you have dripping.

Search for the Ultimate Oil Change thread. It may of already been given to you. Chris and others use a clear tube and run it into the drain pan you use for the crankcase oil catch. Lowe's has this tube in the plumbing dept. It was .79 cents a foot. You'll need 5ish feet. Then grab a couple of wooden golf tees or bolts to plug up the ends of the tube after you drain it. That'll keep the residual from making a mess in your tool (giggity) box or your work shop.

The only thing I could add to Chris's write up is the drain valve on the oil pan. Changed mine the other day with no ramps, 10 minutes, and no mess.
I don't have the valve with the nipple, and it doesn't matter, as it doesn't splatter while draining into the pan because of rate of flow. Save the $$ on the reg. model. IMO.

I drian the pan and pull out the dip stick before changing the filter and had no mess at all. i didnt even need the hose on the drain for the filter housing.

 

I'd never seen the Fram, but the Fumoto valve has been around quite a while with a good track record. I like the Fomoto operation better, than the twist Fram, as in locking in the closed position and construction. IMO.[/quote]


I had the fram in my '94 Toyo Pcup never had a prob with it leaking. But then i never heard of the Fumoto till today either...

 

Are we talking about a mess from the oil drain pan stand point or the mess from the "upside" down filter?
