My mother's family was doing well until the 1929 crash. They lost house, farm, everything. Turned my grandmom into a baskets of nerves and my grandpop into a truly and horribly abusive and bitter man.
At one point they were down to living on a broken down bus in back of an orchard and paying with labor.
To her dying day, my mother stashed canned goods and spare change in every nook and cranny imaginable. She'd been cold, hungry, and dirty, and it wasn't going to happen again.

My Pop's family always joked they was already so backwoods and poor, they only heard about the Depression after it was mostly over. My paternal Great Grandpop and Granpop both got hired as dozer operators on WPA, etc projects and so in some ways they did better than many.

Once WW2 came along, things got better economically all the way around. A number of my Pop's aunts became machinists during the war at the factories in Reading.

Pop's and most my uncles and cousins view of money was that life was short and uncertain so "Laissez les bons temps rouler!" .
They were the bikers, and drinkers, and wild partiers. If my uncle hadn't been a constable...;)
All my paternal uncles and cousins served in the military going back through the 1800's, mostly Marines.
Often at the suggestion of a judge or helpful police officer.
The day my pop left for Parris Island, him and 2 other were given a ride to the train station by the Reading Police, "Just to make sure you fellas don't miss your train."
I signed the papers on my 17th birthday.

As one may imagine, this opposing view of money led to no small amount of 'discussion' between the folks.

OTOH, he was the guy who went to work even if his spine was severed. On snow days, he thought nothing of rousting me out of bed at midnight to have the truck and driveway shoveled for him to leave at 4am.
Some days he'd take me with and have me shoveling out the baydoors and clearing trucks. Different time, no insurance/osha etc..

My folks cracked middle class for about 15 minutes in the late 80's. Then they both had their coronaries and it was downhill from there.

We're doing okay, but I'd have to say Upper Lower Class, Lower Middle Class at best.
We're hanging in there, but it wouldn't take much to tip us into the bin.

We had what we needed. Took 1 vacation every year. Lived in an older house and drove normal cars. My dad worked 12- 14 hours a day 6 days a week most of my life. Mom stayed home and kept me and my bros in line. My dad got a promotion at work when I was 16. He was so happy. He started to have more time with us. They helped buy me a car. We got a bigger house so my brothers didnt have to share a room. It all worked out. Now my dad makes big bucks but im out of the house and have my own family now.

All of his hard work paid off... He put in a crazy amount of hours but now he is probably in the 1%...

No surprise here, after the OP created the thread, he is gone. I gotta say in my life I have dealt with many of a rich kid. Every single one was a conceited ass. Now if you EARN your way to being wealthy, then hey, great job. Born with a silver spoon in your mouth? Then when you graduate high school, go get a job. After you earn your way through college, then we will talk.

God did I sound bitter there or what? Hahaha.

    :rofl::rofl::rofl: Good one!

Seriously though, back when I was in high school all the guys and girls who had wealthy parents thought that they literally were "better people" than the rest of us.
