My parents had money when I was a kid. That didn't mean I did...

My dad had me working at his businesses (Auto repair shops) starting when I was 12 until I went to college. Changing oil, repairing tires and cleaning up the shops. I made $2/hour for ass busting work. Made me realize I didn't want to do that for a living later in life. I could have gone to a private college ($$$$) but my parents said I had to pay for half of any college costs. No free rides. I graduated from a public university.

All that work made me appreciate money for what it was worth.

    Silly me.
I tried to give a serious if somewhat humorous answer because I like history and took this for a serious question.

There was a brief time when Joe Sixpack could work at the mill while Jane Sixpack raised the kids.
Joe might have read at the 3rd grade level, but as he was a hard worker he always had a job.

There was a time when the jobs were simply all over the place. No wastrel too grizzled not to get hired for the 3rd shift clinker crew.

I was 16-y/o worked at a union company as a freaking spray painter and was cashing such a large paycheck that I couldn't even blow it. $15 an hour in 1976 plus so many bennies I didn't even know what they were.
Blue Cross, pension, disability, yeah, whatever. I even got all of my fed taxes back. :p
They hired me because everyone one else was at Limerick or Doehlers or Firestne making $20. I was a 16-y/o idiot.
I quit to join the Marines. :p

I don't envy young folks at all.

    You mad, bro? :D

Seriously though, I drove a 88 s10 blazer for about 3 years and then the transmission went out and I went without a car for about 6 months. That's how long it took me to save up a decent amount to use as a down payment on a civic. I was in college and worked part time. For my blazer, I worked on a farm bailing hay for 2 summers and used the money to buy the blazer off a family friend. My parents weren't poor but they weren't rich either. They instilled in me that you have to work hard in order to get the things you want. To me, working hard for what I want allows me to enjoy it more

    Do dents and scratches count?

This can still be done. It's called the merchant marines. Wife doesn't work. We live in a nice home in a neighborhood full of doctors and business owners. Their is always money left over at the end of the month. All that is needed is a willingness to work hard. Their are no sick days. This means you have the flu, you are working. And, you better not slack off. It's a hard life, but very rewarding.

Wait a minute... isn't upper middle class the same as middle class?
Is there a lower middle class?

I think I fit with the lower upper class :p

upper middle class is poor rich. not like 28.5% credit card interest and minimum payments to look rich. But more like 2.8% interest to look rich.

in 1972, my dad made $30K a year. we drove a brand new Lincoln Continental. He had 6 kids in private school and we lived in a new 2 story brick colonial. try that now on $30K.

I have the hospital bill from when I was born in 1961. $282.00 TOTAL. my dad paid half down and the other half when we were discharged.
