I just went past 3500 and have owned my new Tacoma for 6 months now. Do you think I should change the oil at 6 months or wait until 5K miles?

I'm a rookie in the DIY department, but am going to try to undertake the maintenance as much as possible on my own. I'm hoping I can knock most of it off with patience.

Thanks for any info you can give.

I don't think it will hurt to wait.

Are you running sythetic or conventional? I've read that conventions has the 6 month recomendation because over time and wear the oil and additives separate whereas synthetic will not separate (I may be wrong as I'm only quoting something that I read once somewhere).

I'd say change it, you're over the 3K mark and at the 6 mo. mark. Both have been the relied upon as the norm for some time. At most, an oil change is going to run you about 30-35 bucks depending on where you buy your oil and what kind you buy. 5 Qt Mobil 1 Synthetic was $26 at Walmart the other day, although they had 10 Qt.s of Castrol full synthetic on sale for like 35.

+1...I hope they did. It's better for break in. Change it out...Sitting that much is good reason.
