We are to assume that you didn't run them down with an impact wrench followed by your check of the torque wrench? Technically you shouldn't be using the torque wrench to tighten, only to check, but that is the way most people do it.

My guess is discount ruined them. I see them use the torque wrench but not without the impact first. My guess is they zipped it too tight and then they go around the circle with the torque wrench for that satisfying click (even though they’re already tighter than the torque spec).

that’s just a guess, but definitely what I’ve seen at some Discounts. So I would be questioning them, and not necessarily the parts just falling apart for no reason.

Here’s what I do and always do. I hand thread them to start. Then run them in with an impact just to save time but do not torque… just “cinch”. Than torque to spec.

Well thankfully you have another 5 lugs for safety.

83 ft/lb…damn. My trailer torque spec is more than double that.

I have always been a 90 ftlb guy when it comes to torquing lug nuts. That equates to one solid "ugga" with my trusty 4 sided lug wrench. :)

But OP, I gotta believe yours must have seen excessive force sometime in its life. Those things rarely fail in my experience.

They could have also over torqued them at the port. Especially with all the strike talk recently, wouldn't surprise me if the higher ups said swap the wheels and get it out of here asap. My last Tacoma had the pink and blue chalk on the lugnuts, this time nothing.

I will say that discount paid for me to get all of my studs replaced and ordered me new lug nuts due to them over tightening.

I rarely have discount actually put my wheels on because I’m normally there with a new set of wheels and I just put them on myself. This time I was lazy and they ruined a $250 set of lug nuts and cross thread or broke at least one stud on each wheel. They also put a huge scratch in the barrel of one of my Volks that they also paid to have re finished.

nothing against discount, normally have great experiences but that tech really messed up.

Somebody cranked on them at some point.

I lost a lug nut between the dealer and home after the very first free service. All of the lug nuts on that wheel were loose to the point of easily moving them two fingers. Lucky I didn’t lose it and kill me or another unlucky person driving next to me.

The other wheels were attached with an impact, no question. I had to use a 1/2 inch drive, 36” breaker with a cheater pipe to get them loose to retorque them. Lucky I didn’t end up in your situation myself.

That was the last time my truck went to the dealer for anything but one warranty job and a recall and even that I checked their work in the service drive with odd looks coming from every direction. This is the kind of thing that happens, Just because you do things to right pretty much guarantees someone else won’t and ruin something. I’d be making a few phone calls in your shoes.

Absolutely. Spare isn’t needed all the way to the parts store and back home. :D

    Sometimes, but not always.
I will do a test click on a lug before I take the wheel off.
But usually, I set my wrench to 70 ft/lbs. You’ll know if the wrench doesn’t click before it gets “tight”.

The lower ball joint mount bolts are 118 ft/lbs. So there’s a “test bolt” for 83 ft/lbs.
If you really want make sure it’s going to click.

Tire shops are the worst. I got new tires recently. They broke one of the tire sensors and did replace it but without tech stream, I couldn't get tire pressure working.

On top of that, they couldn't be bothered to clock the tires using the orange/yellow dots.

Yeah, I watched a guy at the local shop use a torque wrench.
He torqued the wheel off the ground. He was a big guy, he basically spun the tire with one hand and used the other to “slam” the wrench forward. The wrench definitely moved past the point of “click”.

And yes, it was on my truck.
I was not too concerned, because I never used a torque wrench on anything until I joined this site.
Let’s just say, I am/was guilty of cranking them down. At least they were tight, so I didn’t complain.
