I have seen many guys consider 5.29s for 35s with armor to get that pep back, but hey I’m sure every rig is different as well as what the driver wants as well. Again if it works it works.

I guess my whole point is 4.88’s and 37’s are fine. Are they optimal? Maybe, maybe not. Now if I was building a Tacoma from scratch and starting with a stock one I might do 5.29’s. But without trying them and saying I can’t do 37’s because I’ll have to regear again. Or on man I only 4.88’s so I’ll be screwed. Or I might be in trouble because I only have 4.88’s and a supercharger.

Between the tune and 4.88’s mine drives better than stock and 285’s.

But as you said, it’s driver preference. Mine is an auto and all I care about it being able to cruise at 70 at a fairly low rpm (~2k in my case) to stay over 10mpg. If I need to pass or go up a hill, that’s what downshifting is for. ;)

Actually I’ll add one more thing. Without gear lock and 1.05 I might not sing the same tune. 37’s and 4.88’s put right in the spot where the truck doesn’t know what do to.

If you are on perfectly flat ground with no wind it does okay. Otherwise it will constantly shift from 4-5-4. And you end up using sport mode most of the time.

So with that said on a heavy truck and freeway driving and an auto:
37’s and no tune with 4.88’s - might be kind of miserable.
    37’s and tune/gear lock - okay
37’s and 5.29’s - this will only get you a couple rpm difference so I really think you’ll still need a tune here to.

Off road (not rock crawling) 4.88’s are fine.

Wouldn’t it make the teeth weaker to go past 5.29? At least for the wheeling you do.

Too bad there aren’t any 37x11.5 options in a 17” or 16” wheel. it would probably make it much easier to mount them.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.

Also, in terms of MPGs, if you haven’t corrected your odometer for your tire size then your MPG calculations are not going to be accurate. The only way you can get an accurate reading would be known distance. Gearing is irrelevant. Not 100% sure for third gen but my ‘14 adjusted significantly when I set the correct tire size. After being dead on checked by two separate GPS devices my MPGs were much better than I thought.

Gearing is 100% relevant to gas mileage.

Regardless of my uncorrected display says if one day it says 15 and the next it say 10. That’s a decrease. Sure it’s not correct, but it’s still a tool to measure gas mileage. I think mine is 20% off or so.

Prior to gear lock and updated tune my gas mileage, corrected, would be under 10.

Yap. It's not accurate, but if u measure from the same baseline, it's still an accurate representation

Ok, not going to go down a rathole but your odometer gets its reading from your speed sensor and is not affected by your gear ratio. I did t mean to imply that gear ratios don’t affect your gas mileage.

All I am saying is I have a 6000lb Tacoma with 37s, headers, flow matched injectors, supercharger and 4.88s with 118lbs of unsprung weight on each corner and I thought I was only averaging 13MPGs. This was not accurate and was not the case once I adjusted my speed sensor I put via hypertech inline system.

We are on the same page. I understand exactly how an odometer works with respect to larger tires.

I’ve already said my mpg/speedometer/odometer is going to be off roughly 20% if I remember correctly. So my displayed mpg is 10 which means I’m really getting 12.

I don’t really care what my mpg is. It’s a truck with armor and 37’s. I know it’s bad.

It’s on a precious page now but I don’t think I even said anything about if you do 37’s you’ll get 10mpg because that’s what I get. I said I wanted to preserve some gas mileage so I’m fine with 4.88’s. However in the end 5.29’s and 4.88’s probably won’t be that much of a difference anyway.
