I fell in love with this guys build awhile ago. I just finally got into contact with him and got all the specs he did lower and upper control arms and the tie rods all that. I asked if he thinks it’s safe and worth it to take this route as I would love to have my Tacoma evolve into this. He says cvs are cheap and easy to replace so it’s no big deal. And the other thing is the most wheeling I’m able to do if maybe once a week with my work schedule. Let me get some opinions on this

Do a manual hub conversion and you can reduce CV wear dramatically

Fuck yea bro, this is all a learning experience aka first time. So I’ll prolly have professionals do the welds and cutting but I plan to install lift and tires myself.

35s are pushing it for IFS.

While CVs are “cheap and easy to replace” 1) they aren't THAT cheap, and aren’t really THAT easy to replace, especially on the trail. If you get tired of replacing CVs all the time, you could always get some beefier CVs, but now your diff is likely to be the weak point, or some other component that’s not cheap OR easy to replace.

So I guess carry 3 or 4 spares with you...

Why 37s though? Do you currently have 33s or 35s and have been doing trails where your current tires are inadequate? Or do you just think the truck just looks cool and want to copy the build?

If you’re doing trails that “need” 37s, you really need to just SAS it.

Manual hub CVs are physically smaller in diameter than ADD CVs. Not by much, just a few mm's but still worth noting

Might reduce wear while driving around in 2wd, but in 4wd those 37s are gonna be putting a lot of strain on the IFS system ADD or manual hub, as well as the steering rack in general

And yeah CVs are easy to replace but it's still a PITA to have to do it offroad, especially considering they tend to break when you're not in the best of places to be working on one

I think @POSTacoMike just put 36s or 37s on his IFS 1st gen, he would be a good person to talk to since he's also done it

I’ve been following a few guys that have been going to 37”. I ran 35” all last year. I wanted a big fuck off snow shoe tire for winter wheeling in the Rockies. I figured I could make both the 36x15.5, and a 37x12.5 fit, and work.

Things to consider. 1) I swapped out my ADD tube to a non ADD tube. 2) ADD cv’s are 6mm (1/4”) larger. Might not seem like much, but they are stronger. 3) Gears. Are you going to regear? @snotaco is running 4.30’s, I’m running 4.88’s. A buddy up here is running 4.10’s.

As for SAS, personally, I have to drive 4-600km to a trail head, I prefer the IFS ride. Time will tell whether I’ve made the right choice. But with more of us doing this, it’ll push manufacturers to look at upgraded IFS.

I did a frame swap last spring. While I was there, I cut about 1-1/4” out of my cab mounts. Then we cut the firewall to match. I’m trying to not go to a body lift.

I am excited for it. But it’s marlin. Who knows when it’ll actually hit market for our trucks.

I personally couldn't wait any longer, I just dumped a bunch of money into rebuilding my front end. Maybe in 5 years when I feel like dumping $10grand into it, it'll be out :mudding:

I have this same curiosity about the OP's needs.

If they don’t get at it, I’ll figure out a way to beef mine up. Even if it’s weld in the front end of an fj cruiser to get the 8”, with a better LCA, or something. Sounds like the R&P from Marlin might be a LC200 rack and pinion? Something along those lines. There’s gotta be a way to do this.

Got a guy local to me running 4d’s on an FJ cruiser. 5 years now. Wheels it even. Pretty impressive.

    This.
If anything, Manual hub equipped trucks on 37s might actually be weaker offroad.
