On February 10, I had just driven my brand-new 2016 Limited Tacoma 333 miles from the dealership (where I purchased it) to my hometown . I live in a small rural area of the northernmost part of Michigan and had to travel that far to find the exact truck I wanted. Something which is common for me when buying new vehicles . I was turning from the main highway into my neighborhood and while waiting to turn it was rear-ended by a vehicle traveling around 45 to 50 miles an hour. The first damage estimates were $13,000 , but then that was increased to over $17,000 . Once the body shop did a closer inspection and contacted Toyota, they were instructed on exactly what needs to be fixed and how to do it . It is now nearly 2 months since the accident and I was just advised the new frame arrived at the body shop today . My vehicle goes in on the 18th to get prepared . It took me a month to get over the injuries I sustained and then the frustrating part of not being able to drive my truck for nearly 2 months. While I have confidence in the body shop I'm using (from previous experience), I can't help but to feel that my vehicle will never be "new" again. Somehow, somewhere, something will not be exactly the way it was when it left the factory and that concerns me . How can I have confidence in the body shop and still have this doubt , I don't know. I do feel that it is the best body shop in my area . Anybody ever been through something like this before ? AND THE DRIVER THAT HIT ME WAS TEXTING!!!!! HERE IS A STARK REMINDER OF HOW DANGEROUS THAT IS. No inclement weather, he just smashed right into me as I waited to turn . Fortunately, I did not have my wheels turned to the left while waiting to make the turn or the impact would have pushed me into oncoming traffic, which was traveling 45 to 50.

At least you're okay. Trucks are replaceable. People aren't. Glad you're okay man.

I'm happy to hear your healing well. I don't know what state you're in but look into it and see if you can get the diminished value for your car. Some states have a law that the insurance company owes you diminished value if your car was in an accident. Look into it and see if you can get some money on top of your injuries. Diminished value could be as much as it cost to repair your vehicle. I know that doesn't make your car new again but at least you'll have the assurance that you will be made whole again. There are attorneys out there that do all of the negotiations for you with no cost to you. The other persons insurance will be responsible for fees. Best of luck.

Having had about 17k$ in damages to my brand new taco at 3,000 miles, I found it to be more of a mental game. I finally got my truck back (no frame damage) and have been happy since. I looked all over it for signs of the accident and fortunately was able to not find any. I am glad that you're okay! The diminished value is a separate claim you need to file with the other driver's insurance. So you'll have an accident claim (to do the repairs) and the diminished value claim (to cover the value loss based on such a massive accident).

One thing I don't understand is how the truck wasn't considered totaled with frame damage and $17000 in damage.

$17K in damages on the new truck wasn't enough. According to my insurance it was going $28k in damages to total out. I laughed and asked what would be left with 28k in damages. Fortunately the OP was okay. Truck is replaceable.

Sticker on my truck was about 40k. In Michigan, a vehicle has to sustain 70% of it's s value to be considered a total. With "No Fault" insurance here, diminished value is not an option. Even though there I was injured , my injuries don't qualify me for any legal action to recoup anything either. I posted this to ask if anyone else had something similar done. Weren't a bunch of tacomas recalled ten or so years ago for rusted frames? Anyone experience that? If so, were you confident everything was done correctly? When I get some time tomorrow, I will research that more. My injuries were mostly soft tissue . The truck did exactly what it was supposed to do in a collision and crumple in certain areas to absorb the energy. I was stiff and sore for 30 days after the accident . Yes, it was only truck that was damaged and it could've been worse, but you can understand my frustration.

Glad you are OK. After it is fixed I would hold on to it for several months and then trade it for a 2017

All I can say is I had a nice car hit hard once. Real hard. Probably 30k on it at the time IIRC.

The shop did an outstanding job with the repairs. I mean really outstanding. Sold it to my son around 70k, bought it back around 150k, gave it to a neighbor for his daughters 1st car at 200k (long story but involved a decent tax break).

She finished HS and went off to college with it at 250k.

So yea, they can be fixed right.

    Glad your ok.

A vehicle with that much damage will never be the same. There will be something that is off or feels different. I don't care what anyone says

If you are just worried about the frame being replaced, rest easy. All the ones I have heard about being replaced have gone well and been good as new, and that's usually on a truck with 100k+ miles on them, not 395.

Glad you are OK. Your taco will be too

I had the frame replaced on my 2003 Tacoma under the recall. l had zero problems afterward.

Well there was one - they forgot to replace one of the rubber plugs on the backing plate after readjusting the drum brakes. I found it still sitting on top of the axle.

If it were my truck, I would pay an additional $250 and drop the new frame off at a gavanizer and then have the body shop install it. Has anyone ever galvanized a Tacoma frame? I have two land rovers with replacement galvanized frames

Had a similar experience with my 05 when it was only 2 months old. A guy went through a stop sign and caught me in the front drivers side. Air bags went off, steam everywhere, leaking every fluid a vehicle has and couldnt open my door. 21/2 months and $14500 to fix. In the 11 years and 260k miles since the accident I have never had a problem related to the accident. No squeeks no rattles I never even needed an alignment done for 11 years after. I also had my frame replaced 1 year ago and have not had any problems related to that either. If done right you should not be able to tell it ever happened.

Most important is that hopefully there will be no long-term health issues with you. The truck is just an object, but I do feel your pain. My wife rolled our Jeep Liberty two winters ago. It had a blue book value of around $4000, but the damage was almost $5500 to fix, which they did. I suspect there was some sort of collusion between my insurance company agent and the recommended body shop. I dropped the insurance company and sold the Jeep for $4000 when I got it back.

Better 17k and a new frame than 5k and a frame that just might not be quite right, but looks real good. I personally would just put it behind you and consider it your new truck. It will still be new. Actually newer.

Make sure your insurance company gets you the money for the depreciation of the vehicle. Most insurance company's will not fight that battle because they don't want to pay it when the claim is against them!

Yeah I think you're better off because the frame is being replaced. If they were going to keep the original frame and straighten it out you might end up with more problems.
