(3G) Anyone running Infinity Kappa Coaxials?

Hey guys, I've been eyeing these speakers on the recommendation of a co-worker but I'm concerned about whether or not they fit in the doors of our 3rd Gen trucks? @Man of Steel TRD has assured me there is plenty of room, but I am curious if anyone else has installed them and if there is anything I might need to make a smooth install.

I have the JBL stadiums, they are the exact same woofers as the Kappas are. The speakers fit just fine in the doors, the only issue I ran into though was that as water comes down the window, it drips onto the magnets of the speakers and corroded the terminals, it also caused one of the speakers to freeze when the water in the coil froze overnight.

If you get the kappas, I recommend getting the foam speaker buckets to protect them from dripping water. You do have to cut out the bottom of the foam buckets though otherwise the speaker will sound like trash in the sealed area.

 

Good luck with these speakers as they were very high up on my list of next speakers.. look like they’re very nice to me.. in for the feedback and info

Could you point me in the direction of the foam speaker buckets you speak of? And when you say "bottom" which part does that imply?

I'm assuming that this only applies to doors with power windows as well, so I shouldnt need them for the AC rears I imagine.

I got these ones. What I mean by cut out the bottom, it just to cut a hole in the bottom thats pretty big. You just need the foam things to create a "umbrella" over the top of your speakers to keep water from dripping onto them. If you dont cut a big hole in the bottom it creates a sealed enclosure for the woofers and they do not sound good at all with a sealed enclosure.
When I first installed mine, I didnt cut them and they sounded very boomy and very un-natural.

Ok, your going to have alot of tweeters up front so be prepared for a very bright sound. You will have 3 tweeters per side (2 in each door speaker and 1 inch each side of the dash) Its not a bad thing, but it may be a little overpowering.

Also, when you go to install the infinity speakers dont use the screws they give you unless you get some washers. The screws that infinity/JBL gives you have heads that are too small. The frames on the speakers will flex a little bit and the screw head pop through the holes and the speakers can fall out. I used thick plastic washers from some of my rack mount DJ equipment.

 

I'm not a huge car audio expert, but I do think I might prefer a "bright" sound, so let's hope it works out. I was really enamored with the audio improvements when I upgraded the tweeters.

An amp is in the cards but won't go in right away. Still trying to decide between the Kicker Key 180.4 and the
NVX VADM4 400W RMS Full Range Class D 4-Channel Car Micro Amplifier

 

I would go with the kicker key as it can be run inline with the OEM harness. The NVX one will need some extra wiring to run.


If you find the tweeters are a little too bright, get some craft felt and just tape a square over the tweeters in the infinity speakers. This will muffle them enough that they dont hurt.

 

I got @Man of Steel TRD helping me with all this and he suggested the NVX and is going to be taking the lead on the wiring.

My priority is just to have something small enough I can tuck in the dash like some other members have done.

 

That’ll sound damn good. @5nahalf helped get me pointed in the right direction during my install. He’s good at this stuff but you’ve got some nice speakers

 

So with the help of @XPOTRPR and @Man of Steel TRD we got the speakers swapped within a few hours before I took off to Southern AZ for some camping.

The speakers sound phenomenal with the SR's base head unit. I can see where an amp could improve the sound, but the system isn't lacking at this point and both the guys were impressed with the sound and quality of the speakers.

Sound deadening and head unit will come at a later date, now.

 

Glad they are working good for you, I had been using infinity kappa speakers since the old 50cs speakers (old green cone ones from 1999) loved them. The tweeters I think are what make infinity sound good, they have always gone with a soft dome, while JBL goes with a hard dome. I switched to JBL for this truck though because infinity went with a gold trim on the tweeters

 

I like the copper look, especially living in the copper state, but they are flashy for sure.
