Whoops. It's the same post. I initially thought I had detailed the problem here, but then realized that only Chris got to hear that rant. I have a lot of rants going on these days.

Anyway. So that nut and stud are two separate pieces like I thought/remembered. The bar is supposed to ride on top of the shoulder on the stud. Then the clutch cover. Then the nut. I FINALLY got the nut and stud separated. Actually, it was also melted to the clutch cover too. There's a metal bushing in the cover. I separated those first then went to work. I can't remember exactly what it took to thread the nut off, but I do remember getting to a point that I didn't care what the threads looked like. I also remember that there were a lot of impact tools involved. Surprisingly, I was able to salvage everything. I think that stud threads into plastic. Which is the stupidest thing ever. If it wasn't plastic, it's aluminum. It was super soft.

So, I get all this shiz apart. Put it all back together with the scrench and it sticks together again. To the point I had to break out the impact again. No sense! My next bright idea is a washer under the nut to keep it from going so far down on the threads. Looks good. Works good so far. I go out to test and it explodes. This could've been my fault. I may not have had the chain seated on the sprocket well. I couldn't test that theory because I had lost the washer and reached the limits of my patience. We have an Ace Hardware up the street and they do Stihl repairs. I'm going to see if they know of a fix. The end.

    THAT doesn't sound placating.

It's odd because Stihl apparently uses a captive nut system (news to me) , so I dont really understand why it wasnt allowing you to apply the necessary torque on it. Hopefully the shop comes back with the actual diagnosis and cause, because I've never heard nor seen shit like that.

Honestly the fact that you attempted all of that and still tried it out is super ballsy to me.

I would've said fuck it and taken the saw in, because me dying due to my own incompetence is on the list of shit not to do.

Honestly, the stupidity of what I did, didn't even cross my mind until much later. Even when the shit exploded, I was more mad at the saw than anything. A few hours later I realized I could've been seriously injured. So yaaay.

That definitely isn't a captive nut. It threads into the oil pump assembly for the bar. And from what I saw online the threads go all the way through into the oil tank. Tell me that isn't brilliant. Other saws the threads were in aluminum or another metal. Guess I didn't go up far enough in the model range to get the good stuff.

I was actually impressed with Chris' Echo. It just wouldn't quit. Fired up every time and ate whatever he put the chain into. Yeah, it was dull by the end of the day, but that's to be expected.

I've heard good things about echo chainsaws.

I grew up on Husqvarna products. I've always been told if you buy a stihl, buy the pro line stuff. And that's what both of my stihl things are. I've got a mixed bag of husq/ stihl around the house.

I just have a lower tier Stihl leaf blower and the thing is bullet proof. I wouldn't hesitate to get a Stihl chainsaw. I like Echo and Husqy as well.

I never changed my chain from when I started cutting those trees down till we finished on Saturday. Now that says a lot for Oregon chains but also not using the stock low kick back chains. My echo is slightly modded (as to be expected with anything I own) with a hole drilled in the muffler to bypass heat. But the echo ct590 is pretty much a standard of the industry when it comes to affordable mid sized saws.

You have to buy a stihl if you live in nova. Your neighbors wouldn’t be caught dead pruning trees with an echo.

The new foam soled shoes are junk. Especially to run in. They pack down fast, shred when walking on pebbles, and are slick as snot when on damp surfaces. But it’s the new norm so in a year or 2 no one will know any better.

I will present some solutions: The first is to stop running. Running sucks. Everyone hates doing it. You must be crazy to WANT to run. Just smoke more cigarettes. Much healthier. My second solution is: baptize yourself into the barefoot running craze. Or step up a little with a minimal shoe. And lastly: have you tried a Nike Air shoe? I hear there's no sole at all on them.

Pretty much all my shoes are minimus shoes. I have a pretty extensive collection of that variety ranging from some super thin “socks” and toe shoes to marathon shoes with slightly thicker soles. I used to buy from a company called altra and I loved them. Until they sold out to China and now they are all foam and last a week, but still cost 100 bucks and up. So I’ve been looking for a cheap alternative to work in and I figured the old airwalk skate shoes would give me a flat minimus type shoe with a wide toe box. But even those are all foam with a trim ring of rubber to make them appear as if they are rubber.

Echo’s are a great saw. I have on old top handle (limbing)that I need to get working again. Dang fuel prime bulb dry rotted out and needs to be replaced. Also could use a good cleaning and go through as well.

Buy some of those vibram soled shoes. I had some 5 fingers that were awesome to run in. I think they were the Komodo model. Great trail running shoe
