Does anyone have a part number for the ring yet?

I just spoke to the dealer, and the parts guy said that the light has to be removed, which means dropping the rear portion of the headliner. Evidently there's a new gasket, and some silicone that's applied to ensure a good seal. I don't know about everyone else, but I can just see greasy fingerprints ending up on my pristine headliner if I have the dealer do it. The guy did say that he's only seen the lights being replaced on dark colored Tacoma's, so perhaps the heat generated by the sun on the dark color impacts the seal more so than a light color (mine is Super White). He also said some trucks don't seem to be impacted, so recommended that I keep an eye on it rather than having it replaced. I just don't want to end up facing an interior replacement like some have.

Mine is a super white and showed no signs of leakage but I got it done anyway. Better safe than sorry.

Does having a truck cap affect this install at all? Just got my notice in the mail

There is a lot of speculation and incorrect info that dealers have told people in here. Most of the questions are answered in the service campaign instructions.

Yes. Some dealers will require you remove your cap, other dealers will make it happen without making you do it. I was scheduled for 3rd Toyotacare service last Sat and they were supposed to do my light. I told them I had a cap, which they said wouldn't be an issue. Then they refused to do the work. I had a chat with management and now they are going to do it next week and give me a loaner car. I've bought several new vehicles there, sold several others for them to friends/family and just had a fiasco with warranty work on our Sienna so they were making a good faith effort to not lose my future business. If your primary dealer won't touch it with a cap check around. The cap would only need to be slid back a couple feet for them to do the work, and it might be possible to do it with the cap on with a fold-down cap/cab window. They are supposed to remove the headliner on all of them to check for water intrusion, I doubt they do when there is no staining but likely bill Toyota for the hours anyway, so someone will probably want to do it, especially if you don't have any leaks (yet).

NICE! Service told me they were supposed to remove the headliner on all of them to check for internal water intrusion. Did not want them pulling mine as I have not had any leakage and have been watching for it.

What happens if you ignore the recall and do it yourself then later on it leaks?

Presumably I'd play dumb? Good question though.

I think so, but I thought dealers weren't supposed to sell this part...Something about collecting warranty money. I should try and order one for myself to go with the new third brake light I bought a few weeks ago. Part numbers in link below...

Ah, we need both parts for the maximum goodness but the -HW is likely "only if you have a leak"? Meanwhile a DIY you'd for sure replace as much as you possibly could.

Maybe a bit more waiting to see if we can get both... I'm 99% certain I'd be an inspection-only, not much rain here.

I'm not sure what the part differences are. Maybe one is the rubber ring gasket and the other is the silicone? Yes, trying to avoid the dealer on this repair, but I may need to go in anyway. My truck doesn't see much rain let alone daylight. Less than 11k miles. :anonymous:

This is exactly what was needed to clarify things. So, leak present, headliner comes down/out and new assembly is installed. No leak, fix is from the outside with silicone and a trim ring.

Damn, I'm taking mine in this Saturday for the light and fuel pump. I guess I'll either drive it away that day or weeks later. Hopefully my headliner is still ok, though I've been avoiding car washes because of this.

No big deal if I do, they'll replace it.
Wouldn't mind getting new carpet at all.

Why do they need to keep you truck there?
They should inspect it and if it needs replaced order it and have you come in once it's received.
I would be pissed, unless they gave you a loaner then I wouldn't care.
