I had mine done today. It was not leaking but I had it done anyway. About 90 minutes. Smooth deal.

I did have a rental(F150, it sucked)they kept it because of the mold found. They said corporate doesn’t want people to take their vehicle back if mold is found until it’s cleaned, parts replaced etc. They cannot force you to leave it though.

I took my 2016 in for recall this past Monday. They replaced my 3rd brake light and my headliner due to a past leak. I was happy they did because a had a water stain line on the back of the headliner. I'm glad Toyota stepped up with this recall. They had the truck for the day.

(I posted this on the other 3rd brake light thread...thought I'd add it to this thread)...

I don't drive my '17 often but it's kept outside. Walking by it, I noticed the windows were totally fogged. Opening the door, the interior smelled incredibly bad. Water behind the rear seats, carpet soaked. Read here about the third brake light seal problem. Entered VIN in the recall site and saw there was a program. Made appointment with the dealer, dropped it off, got it back 25 days later. Service writer says everything but the steering wheel and dash was removed. Dry ice was placed on the seam sealer, then broken up and removed. A mold mitigation company treated everything but the padding and carpet were replaced. Seats and door cards are now as clean as new. There's a bit of a lingering disinfectant smell (I've only had it back 5 days) but it is diminishing. They told me this was their first Tacoma with the mold problem.

Wow, bought mine in September 2019. Sticker price was $34,???. It was marked down to $28,888. Big numerals on the windshield.

In the fine print on the campaign notice to all North American dealers there is a url for Canadian dealers to reference for the inspection and repair process. So, even though we don't have any notice through VIN lookup, it is possible that Canadian dealers will still do the repair after a little prodding to check the website. I'm going for service in Oct so I'll ask them to look it up and respond accordingly. No leak on mine as yet but you never know.

@vicali , the details are here:

Is there anyone who has ordered the repair kit, part# 000948-CHMSL, and done the repair with the new gasket? Do instructions come with the kit or are there instructions available elsewhere on the forum?

I'm looking at ordering the kit from a US dealer and doing the work myself because Toyota Canada hasn't seen fit to include Canadian trucks in the campaign yet. Seems strange that mine came from the Texas factory in May 2018 but apparently is equipped with a seal that's not going to leak over time.

Did you get the repair kit, 00948-CHMSL, and can the repair be done without pulling the light assembly?

I just had mine done this morning as a preemptive measure. Took 1.5 hours, but the service center was slammed this morning. The "fix" looks factory, and if it was there when you bought the truck, you'd never know the bezel was added. Actually looks "beefier" on the super white paint. What I thought was going to be a "duct tape" fix actually turned out perfectly fine.

The only issue is, they used 3M 4200 evidently, which is not only a sealant, but has pretty good adhesive properties as well. I assume the light doesn't have LED bulbs from the factory which would last a long time, so replacing the bulbs in the future will have to be done without removing the fixture.

I didn't do it though the dealer. Not sure what that part number is. I pulled the light and put in a new gasket and that's when I realized the assembly was broken and had to order a new light. From what I've read, the dealer fix is an external wrap-around that is done without pulling the light. The downside I see is that if the assembly is broken this fix won't address that or even verify one way or the other.

Tks, the part # is for the external repair kit which is not available (afaik) at Cnd dealers, yet. I can order it from a US dealer and was wondering if there’s any more involved (without pulling the light assembly) than running a bead around the existing external bezel and then applying the new bezel included in the kit over the old.

That's my understanding, but I have no first hand experience with it.

There's 2 factory fixes: If a leak is discovered, the entire assembly is replaced. If no leak is present, it's addressed from the outside with a sealant and bezel. The "no leak present" kit I think may come in two part numbers. There's the bezel, a mask to keep the sealant contained, the sealant/applicator, and a tool to "shape" the sealant.

Question, any idea how your light got broke? Mine felt a “tad” loose prior to me taking it in. They replaced the gasket and said “it just won’t seal, I think you need a new light assembly”. They claimed it was not covered, so instead of fighting I said to do it. After I paid and was on my way out….I walked back in and asked to see old part. Took the guy a while…came back with my “old light”. It had one broken stud. My question is, after putting in a new gasket, wouldn’t you know the stud was broken? Fishy but I can’t prove it. I won’t ever go back to that dealership. I filed a claim to Toyota.

Yeah, mine had a crack on the part that holds the bolt. Rumors were that an assembly robot had too high a torque spec and cracked some like mine. Because it's not held properly anymore the thin gasket separated and it started to leak. Got a new light and installed and seems fine now. I plan to submit a claim to Toyota for the cost of the part under their "campaign".

Thanks for the pics, looks good. When I first started looking into this and wondering why mine wasn’t on the list, I thought that all repairs (water intrusion or not) would end up with the bezel being applied. But looking a little closer at the repair specs it states that if inspection reveals that a new stop lamp assembly is needed the vehicle does not require the repair kit or the hardware kit (I’m presuming the bezel is included in both kits).

Now I’m wondering if there’s actually a good reason why Cdn vehicles aren't on the list.
