I just got home from my recall "SERVICE". I had to take off my topper so they could access it. I didn't notice any leaking or staining but wanted it checked out. They sent me home and didn't say anything more other than "you're good to go. No leak evidence". When I got home, I noticed, the lens on the light was cracked, moisture was inside the lens and the housing was partially pulled away from the cab. If it wasn't leaking now, it will be next time it rains! I called the service advisor to ask him what he did and told him it was cracked. His technician had noted any cracks when it came in. So he tells me the technician DID notice a crack (yea, right) and put some silicone around the light to make sure it's leak proof. I don't think that is all they are supposed to do. ??? I think they are supposed to install a new gasket; aren't they? 40BC5543-6448-46C4-A4C2-E718281CA2F6.jpg

mine was cracked in the exact same place - the service dept. rejected me for the special recall service as they said there were no signs of leakage. Then they proceeded to tell me they could replace the cracked lens and add the external cover gasket/bezel for a small fee (edit - $150 in parts for new light, bezel and sealant, and $350 in labor so more like $500 which is a rip off). I told them to f off - bought the lens/light on-line and did the install myself. Wanted to do the cover gasket/bezel too but they refused to sell it as they said it can only be sold as part of the recall work (bs). GL.

There's no "gasket" What they do is put a bead of sealant (comes in the kit) Around the light then place a bezel piece on that to cover it up. They do this if they find no leaks. It's hard to tell from the picture if they installed the extra bezel. Did the tech note a crack or not when it came in. You said "had noted" which sounds like a typo. So what was done? Sort of confused here. You make it sound like you brought it in for the recall and they didn't find any leaks so ONLY because it was cracked did they put silicone on it then sent it down the road.

SO was your truck apart of the recall? If not then, I guess you're SOL, as shitty as that sounds. If you got the updated part # of the light, it should have the updated gasket, as far as I know.

yep, was part of the special recall. It was the bezel they would not sell me (my bad on calling it something else). So after I installed the new light (which has a gasket that is way thicker than the one removed) I did use marine sealant. Pretty sure the lens was cracked from the factory but I never looked close at it until I got the recall notice.

I need to get this recall done but the dealer told Id have to remove the roof rack first. I cant see why as it does not cover the lens/light…

Mine has been leaking for who knows how long. With the recent rain I found the entire back was soaked. I really hope it’s not moldy. I don’t want to look. :anonymous:

Just a reminder, I got the gasket from Fred Haus Toyota via Walmart dot com. A tube of permatex gasket maker costs around 5-6 bucks. :notsure:

    gasket part number 00948-CHMSL

There's a few posts in this thread about it if you dig back a few pages. :burp:

    Nooooooooooo.

Thankfully I don’t have backseats (molle panel) and just the factory carpet under my dog platform.

Maybe I’ll just let it grow. Who knows, it could give me a sweet superpower once it becomes sentient.

Yes, a typo. He said he Tech DID NOT make any notations about a crack. The light is pulled away from the cab on the right side. Can anyone tell if it looks like they installed the new 'bezel' on there? 825B313D-0765-442C-9995-EB6817DF7A18.jpg5022BC9E-6A4B-4A98-A82E-954B782FA13B.jpg5022BC9E-6A4B-4A98-A82E-954B782FA13B.jpg825B313D-0765-442C-9995-EB6817DF7A18.jpg825B313D-0765-442C-9995-EB6817DF7A18.jpg5022BC9E-6A4B-4A98-A82E-954B782FA13B.jpg

That black bezel around your brake light is the "new" bezel. Looks to me that they installed it incorrectly, as that part is simply meant to cover the RTV silicone around the original bezel/gasket.

Okay, I guess after installation, the bezel has pulled away from the cab by the time I got home. I am taking it back over there this morning to see if they can fix it.

The light will need to be replaced to fix it right. See Goldenbrew's quote. I actually thought that was high. I bought the updated OEM light off of ebay for $90. There's some instructions on the internet on how to remove the light. It's not hard. Just make sure you plug the electrical connection in THEN set the light in place. I forgot to put the electrical connection off and lightly set it on the truck and realized what I did and almost compromised the gasket. It's VERY sticky. I still got the recall done just to clear my truck from the list for future buyers.

Just got my truck back after taking it to a dealership to get the 3rd brake light fixed (recall). I had really bad water damage on my interior. They practically replaced everything on the inside, sound dampening, carpet, headliner, serv pro came in and did there thing. Gave it to the dealership on Dec 26th, got it back today (Feb 22nd)...so almost 2 months I haven't had it (did get a loaner). Technician called and informed me my ABS light is also on now (I had no dash lights on when I gave it to them) and if I wanted to have it fixed it would cost about 900$..lol. Also as soon as I turned on my heat to warm the truck up, it sounded like something was hitting the fans, it was making a funny noise. As soon as I got to the dealership I told the technician that my worry was that I had no dash lights on when I turned it into them, and now I do, my traction control is also not working. He jotted it down on a piece of paper and said he would ask Toyota if they could do anything. I hope so, otherwise I'll be writing whoever I have to at the corporate office...

One hell of an experience I can say. I really didn't know about the recall. My first sign was a "musty" smell. Originally thought one of my boys spilled something on the back seat, used some good cleaner, still smelled moldy. So that is when I did a quick google search to see if anyone else had that issue. which got me to this website, so that is when I took action. Anyways, just wanted to post my experience, I'm sure everywhere is different.

I don't have any issues with mine, but want to get it fixed since it's on the list of VINs. I told the service rep on the phone that I would wait and he told be it would take about 2 hrs. Does that seem reasonable?
