Decided on the 2020 SR5 2.7 last year, had some doubts early on but grew to really appreciate this vehicle. Yes it’s not fast (it’s a truck), has a bit of gear hunting, but over the year it’s suited my needs. I actually think it’s quite peppy if you drive S mode and hit it’s sweet rpm spots, it performs well on the road. I’ve read a lot on 3.5 v 2.7 and how 3.5’s are superior, but I really am sold on the 2.7. Anyway show your love and appreciation for the 2.7 it’s a fine vehicle

The only way l would go for one would be the 2016 - 2017 when you could get it with 5 Speed MT.

It is a shame that no TSBs have been released for the 2.7l AT. If you are seeing issues, it helps everyone else to let corporate know. The 3.5s have had numerous powertrain TSBs with most addressing shifting. While none have been the perfect solution, many folks have found them to be helpful.

I ended up buying a 2020 SR 2.7 2WD with the SX appearance package and tire upgrade.

Bulletproof engine makes up for the lack of power, imo.

Plan on keeping it as my final vehicle, for the foreseeable future.

Would have been a nice option to have after ‘17. Not sure why it was discontinued.

I am really starting to like mine a lot more, had my doubts at first. Now that its broken in it is shifting much better and as of recent I have started using the ECT which makes a huge difference in my truck. I am still getting roughly 23mpg using the ECT. Originally I thought I might trade it in after warranty period but now I am thinking I am gonna keep it.

Getting to think some here are trying to convince themselves they made the right decision owning a 2.7 when they should of bought the v6.

I don’t own one myself, but I’d argue the 2TR-FE will end up being one of Toyota’s best motors, right up there with the 22RE and 5VZ-FE. Solid motor for sure

Not arguing that the 2.7 is a great reliable motor. Imo, its too slow and really doesn't belong in a tacoma of this weight.

Agree. Definitely shouldn’t be in the 3G given the weight increase compared to the 1&2 gens. Probably shouldn’t have been put in the 2G either.

Still a tough little motor tho. I think they still spec it and the 1GR as the petrol motor options for the Hilux so that should say something about Toyota’s opinion about it’s reliability

I agree, I have a 21' SR 2.7. On the front end of a 1700 mile road trip. It's been a comfortable ride so far and I don't understand all of the complaints about gear hunting. Sure, when I put it in cruise control and drive through the hills of Tennessee it likes to shift up and down but otherwise it's been a solid ride so far. Averaging around 25-27 mpg through the hills too. Be safe out there.

Love my 2.7L. If I keep seeing 2.7L hater posts by the V6ers who don’t have one Im gonna post links to the numerous V6 engine issues people have posted on TW lol :D

Really the 2.7L never needed a TSB so likely why there’s not one. I used to scratch my head reading about all the V6 complaints of gear hunting. What happens with the 2.7 is quite understandable, it’s a low hp engine so if you hit a grade going 75mph on the highway it’s naturally going to shift from 6 to 5 and on a steeper grade to 4. I’ve learned to use S mode if I’m in cruise control when that happens so you don’t get shifting back and forth. Really 6th gear is a bit overkill for this engine but it does do fine in 6th on the flats and likely improves gas mileage.

I have a question for you; a really important one.

Sir, do you, by any chance, drive a TRD2021SPORT!?

    What a tremendous achievement.
