i got mines about a week ago and installed it. feels good knowing i can forget locking my tailgate and not worrying about it. im not saying its 100% protected, but it'll definitely take some time for them thefties to take my tailgate off!!!!!

 

By design the only way to remove is is to unlock it. As with anything if someone really wants it there is no stopping them, this lock will be hard to remove without unlocking it. I am thinking if you had to drill it you have to drill through the lock. A Die Grinder or plasma torch always wins regardless of type of material. It was meant to be the club of tailgate locks for the 2016+ Tacoma. I would also add JB Weld steel stick to the head of the fasteners on the hinge bracket, then even if you forget to lock the tailgate, you cannot unbolt the hinge from the tailgate.

Another level would be the cable washers. I have my 2nd gen lock with cable mod and steel stick. My tailgate is not going anywhere without a fight....

I have a question. I followed the instructions and have everything mounted. I went to try to lock and unlock the unit and cannot seem to tell whether the unit locks and unlocks. It's in a tight position so kind of hard to tell if the unit if locked or just stuck. I turned the key to unlock and it only turns half way. Any input on how far the key needs to turn to disengage?

 

You should be able to completely remove the key in the locked position. If you unlock it fully it should be able to be lifted off the hinge. The best thing would be to loosen the tailgate skin so you can remove the lock. Note when the lock is fully unlocked you will not be able to lift the lock out of the fitting but it can be removed from the hinge. If you want the lock out you have to push in the lock tab and take it out of the housing.

 

My problem was I didn't play with it before putting it on. So to lock, I turn clockwise. Seems like the key rotates 180 degrees then stops. What does this mean? To fully engage the lock, does it turn 360 degrees?

 

No it does not rotate 360, only from a full unlock position to locked where you can remove the key. The key will not come out unless it is locked.

 

Have a few in stock, but will make more this weekend.

 

That skin has play in it to shuffle it around a little if you just loosen all of the screws like a quarter turn. Once you loosen them you can shift it off to the driver side enough to clear the new lock and not put that plastic skin in a bind.

Also, what’s the little black cap over the lock portion in your last photo?

 

We recommend in the instructions to loosen the all the screws so when the lock is in place you can adjust the tailgate skin to fit. The screws holes should center up to the plastic nut plate but there could be a little variance between trucks. You don't really want to have it snap into position. I think each truck will vary based on how the assembly person installed the tailgate skin though.

 

Yep, I figured that out when I went to put my skin back down. It hung up on the lock so I just loosened the skin screws again, adjusted it to the side a tick, and it dropped right into place. Perfect.

Yes it does fit the 2018 as the hinge is the same on 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019
