Has anyone with the new 3rd generation (2016) Tacoma experience a thud when braking and coming to a stop? Basically feels like someone is rear ending you and/or a bump feeling coming from the rear of the truck.

I know this issue has been explained before with the 1st and 2nd gen Tacomas, as axle wrap or those who had the pre-TSB propellor shaft. I thought the 3rd gens would have this issue resolved but now I'm feeling it every so often on mine. Crappy feeling to say the least considering I'm having the dreaded gas pedal/steering wheel vibration too.

I tried tightening my U-bolts today and there was no give (seemed pretty tight) with the torque wrench. Anyone have any ideas or feedback?

Basically just want to know that there are others out there with 3rd gens who may have the same issue and may have a fix. Thanks for any help!

Yes I "had" it - it disappeared after I had my 5K service/oil change!! Maybe Toyota is aware of it and has a service bulletin or something to that effect. When I felt it and herd it I always looked in my rear view thinking someone just bumped me... not hard tho, that was kind of irritating tbh.

It's definitely axle wrap. I had the dealer take my DS apart and lube with the Motorcraft grease Ford uses for their issues. It's better for sure, but still there. Please call Toyota and complain. I'm pushing for them to replace my shaft next if it doesn't resolve. It annoys the shit outta me.

@bobrown14 thanks buddy. That's the feeling I have too and it was kinda scary at first when I felt it for the 1st time (thinking I got rear ended in a brand new truck). Did you mention it to the dealer and they did something about it? Or was it just coincidence after the service visit that it went away and hasn't reappeared?

Our rep told us that its normal (as in not a legitimate "defect", more of an annoyance) and there is a lot of varying degrees of it happening. If yours does it to the point that it bothers you they can replace a part (think it was like an axel coupling or something). Toyota is aware of it and should fix it if its an issue on your truck, from what I've heard from them

Likewise same here..I try to come to a stop gradually and really feather the brake pedal to avoid the thud feeling

I did NOT mention it. The dealer service manager "in charge" of my account has a TRD Sport Manual 2015 ... Probably don't have to mention anything .... they "seemed" to know what they are doing! Kinda scary for a dealership but hey, hopefully I got lucky.

Is this specific to the 2016 Tacoma or just for previous models? Just curious since I'd like to be able to reference a part or TSB for this yr model

From my understanding its 2016 (I didnt ask about previous years though). I spoke to our rep who knew I got a 2016 and so did the other guy in my dept and he asked if we noticed it on our trucks. I think once you can demonstrate the issue at the service dept it should be pretty straight forward fix. I wouldn't go through having it done in the minor cases (just my opinion) because I don't want anyone swapping parts out of my truck unless it has to happen to fix a major consistent clunking noise upon stopping, that would be really annoying. My truck doesn't have this issue as far as I can tell even though on a rare occasion there is a minor "thunk" upon stopping, not disruptive though

This has been an issue for quite a while with 2nd gens too. Not all trucks do it, even though some dealers will tell you they all do it. I drove 2 new trucks with the shop foreman and verified they didn't. After that they opened a case with Toyota. They're working with me to fix it at least.

Hope you get it fixed bud - please keep us all posted on any steps they take and/or resolution.

I saw on previous forum posts that the 2nd gen owners used leaf spring clamps to solve the axle wrap. Anyone have experience using these? Sad that the 3rd gens are still having this problem

Mine does this as well, but not all the time, very annoying and wonder what long term effects it will have. I wonder if putting spring clamps on the forward section of leaves will help out. My truck has 1,200 miles on it.

Passengerside rear suspension has started squeaking. has 6,000 miles and a little over a month old. Sounds like a 40 year old farm truck. Also hard shifting when cold outside speeding up or slowing down and more problems they dont have a fix for at the dealer...............POS!

Check your tranny fluid and get the zerks lubed at you 5K service or diy, FTW. Be sure and ASK to have the drivetrain lubed - tell them you're in dirt a lot and they will TCO.

My 03 did it all the time. Always was under the impression it was drive shaft related until I heard people on her talking about axle warp. Had it happen a few times on the f150. Was just going to make sure everything was greased. Figured if this was a known issue since the first gens, can't believe Toyota is still having issues with this over 10 years later

I've contemplated using spring clamps in front of the axle too. However, I haven't seen anyone try this on a 3rd gen. Also, I've heard it can wear out your springs quicker. I know the 2nd Gen had a TSB come fixing it with an AAL solution (4 leaf spring pack versus the original 3 leaf configuration). Wonder if Toyota is going to address this. I think it's ridiculous that history is repeating itself with the 3rd gens.

Had the truck in the shop 2 weeks after purchase. Not where I bought it but at another dealer. The dealership I bought it at said they could get me in a week later. I said that won't work. So I called 7 or 8 dealers and finally found one that could get me in that day. It was 1 1/4-1 1/3 quarts low. I held the tank of tranny fluid for the tech while he put the fluid in. Great experience at Joe Machen in Columbia MO. Wish I bought my truck from them.

It just had 5k service at 2,650 miles Truck has been having problems since the day I bought it. Also the day I bought the truck was the last vehicle the dealership sold. This was on Saturday and on Monday the dealership was under new ownership. Took it back to them and they pretty much blew me off. Also said I voided my lifetime warranty because I travel in my truck a lot and have to get it worked on at different dealerships.

This is because I get it serviced when its needed and a Toyota dealer is available.
