3rd Gen/ 2nd Gen Engine bay Splash Guard/ Rock guards Template.

Did these last friday. Definitely had to make some adjustments for my second gen from the template but overall it was a big help. Printed poster mode, taped and cut the pieces together and then cut cardboard halves. Definitely took some guesswork, evidenced by multiple holes for some of the clips. Used the versatex mat, industrial 40x60. For clips I got a set from Amazon of multiple sizes, ended up using ones smaller than 9mm. 7.1 and 6.8 I believe. Not sure how that works.

never place them back in as i ran out of clips since the old ones of 3 (actually 4 years, wtf i've had these for this long?) years all broke

Finished up the splash guards today. Thanks again for the templates!! All worked out well. I had to make some minor adjustments as it seems the templates were for 4wd trucks, and my son's truck is just a 2008 2wd base model standard cab. Here are a few tips I learned:

1. Put the template on the the truck and use all the old broken fasteners to hold up the template. They are most likely broken anyway, but they hold up the paper and allow you to place the holes properly.

2. I did the passenger side first and used the cut out to make the driver's side. However two holes didn't match the passenger side and I ended up with an extra hole. No big deal.

3. When I put the paper template up, I then added tape to areas that need more coverage and cut areas that needed to be adjusted.

4. After I cut the rubber mat, I put it on the truck and used the old fasteners. This allowed me to make final adjustment such as making room for brake lines.

All in all, it was a fun project that saved me a bunch of money and was satisfying to do it myself- of course with the great assistance of the template makers!!

How is the material holding up? Do you think the roofing felt paper will work nicely because I have a role of those from fixing roofs?

 

Thanks for the PDF's. Do I need to trim the edges of the paper (so the line from the drawing on each page touches each other when taped together) or just print and align the paper end to end and tape together?

 

It’s still holding up pretty well, I’ll probably make a new set at some point just to get a slighter better fit. I’m not sure stuff rips easily but if you have a roll it wouldn’t cost you anything to try it out.

 

Thanks for the template guys! It was a huge help. I modified it a bit but it saved me a ton of time by giving me a starting point.

I wanted mine to be easily removable for maintenance purposes and I hate those stupid body clips, so I used m6 rivet nuts for all the holes and bolted them in. Just had to drill the holes a little bigger.

I also split it in half and did 2 pieces per side. Main reason for this is I used plastic mud flaps for my material, and I could only get half out of one mud flap. Real heavy duty material, should never have to replace them.

Just thought I’d throw out my mods, in case someone wants to do something similar. Rivet nuts aren’t used very often, but can be super useful in the right conditions.

Nice! I need to get RivNuts for some Moto repairs, so this is a great option/upgrade. Plus... I plan to keep my Gen3 until death... at which point it will be passed to a Scion (if you get my meaning...)
