Can anyone list the final drive gear ratios that come factory in the 3rd gens with the 3.5 and 6 speed manual trans. I bought my truck with a ton of aftermarket parts already installed by the previous og owner, the dealer I bought it from claimed it was geared, am trying to figure out if this is true. Og owner spent well over 10k on the bumper, lift, wheels, leer cap, bed rug, and rigid pods and bumper light bar. So I’m hoping it does have a good set of gears in the diffs.

I’m not sure if there are differences in gearing packages through the years. But my truck is a 2017 trd sport 3.5 6mt.

Alternatively if somebody can confirm that the 6mt trans gears are as follows I can do the math on my own and see if it truly is geared, and what ratios I’m running.

    1st- 3.60
    2nd- 2.09
    3rd- 1.49
    4th- 1.00
    5th- 0.69
    6th- 0.58

The site I got this info from claimed that these were specs for the 3.5 trd sport with the 6 speed manual. But it states 6 speed auto with overdrive under transmission type. I beleive it’s a typo though. If it’s not though can anybody out there list me that trans gear ratios as well? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks man much appreciated! Turns out that it was a typo on that site I guess. I just looked again and at the top it states 17 trd sport 3.5 6speed manual. Then under the engine it lists 2.7l 159hp too:rofl:i guess the only specs they had right were the gear ratios.

Alright so if my calculations are correct I’m running 4:10 gears.

My redline is set at 7200rpm and I’m on 35’s. Awhile back I checked my speed with a gps app which I confirmed is pretty accurate while driving my ol lady’s car. (A few mph off)

This is what I got with the gps.

    1st - 50mph
    2nd - 86mph
    3rd - 120mph

Im pretty good at math but if anybody wants to chime in and double check my answers that would be cool!

Oh hey @jstemp how do you like that sc? Did it give you a nice bottom end boost and smooth out that dip in torque on the low end?

I really like it. There was a nice increase in the low end. The truck just doesn't feel labored and just drives nicer overall. There are still some dips but there are other tunes being worked on to solve the Magnuson Tune shortcomings.

You have 4.30's. There's too much uncertainty in your calculation inputs to nail it that precise. Your rpm's aren't exact, you don't know your precise loaded radius, and there's precision loss in your gps speed.

Put the truck in neutral with the front wheels safely chocked. Jack up one rear wheel so it's off the ground. Mark the drive shaft. Rotate the wheel twice and count the turns of the driveshaft. The number of times the driveshaft spins is your ring and pinion ratio.

Yeah your right, I was actually just doing the math again before I jumped back on here. It occurred to me that it wouldn’t make much sense to take a truck that’s already geared too high and gear it even higher. Also I realized just how close 4:30’s are to 4.10’s in speed difference, it’s not much.

Well I guess I’ll start looking into some 5.29’s and maybe a true lsd like Detroit true trac or something similar. I’m not sure who makes auto lockers for our axles though so I’ll have to look into it. Damn I thought I was getting closer and closer to twin turbos or an sc too! All well I guess I’ll move forced induction down the list and move gears/locker and a 1 peice driveshaft up then.

You have any suggestions for a good set of gears?

I figured you would! Haha Ever since the sc’s came out I’ve been torn on going turbo or sc, I’ve always thought of sc’s to be more bottom end torque and turbos to be more top end and our trucks definitely need more bottom end. The ovtune tt setup appears to spool quick enough that it gives you that nice low end hit, but at the same time the simplicity of the sc setup really attracts me.

I’ve seen the pics and videos of the sc’s and it appears that they don’t congest the engine bay up a whole lot, but pictures can be deceiving. So what’s your opinion on the accessibility aspect? Can you still get to your coils and plugs easily?

Also what kit did you go for, Magnuson or the pro charger?

Currently there are only 4 options for the 8.75" diff in the MT or Offroad/Pro 2016 and up Tacoma.
    Open,
    Factory E-Locker, (made by GKN)
    Eaton/Harrod E-Locker
    or the ARB Locker.

There is currently no LSD of any kind available that I have seen. And I look frequently.

I went with the Magnuson kit. I actually think things in the engine bay are more accessible and less cluttered now. Plugs are still accessible.

The Twin turbo was attractive to me also but seemed like that project kind of died. Not really seeing anything on it latley.

With the 6mt, 5.29’s might be a bit excessive for 35’s if the truck is a daily driver. 4.88’s will get you back to approximately factory gear ratios. It’s a personal preference though.

Ive been searching myself and I’ve come up with nothing so far, it’s disappointing but eventually someone will make one. I’ve always wanted Detroit true trac. Couldn’t afford it when I was younger and blew out the rear end in my 02, so I just bought a used factory axle.

Also I’m running the 8” rear end, I’m a sport unfortunately. But I do get a super sweet hood scooper, that’s as good as a locker isn’t it? Got a good deal on the truck with 10k miles and all sorts of expensive goodies. I wasn’t too worried about a locker, but I do miss having one. Although my 06 did have issues and everytime I needed it it didn’t seem to want to work. It was frustrating to say the least.

The 8.75 comes with the 6mt or the locker.

I have been looking into 4.88’s also and I’m torn. I’m shooting for low gears though, I hate how high these trucks are geared, I swapped my 265/75/16’s off my 06 on while I was waiting on my new 35’s last year and rant stock tires for a week. I found that it was still too high for my liking. 6th gear is virtually useless up here in the mountains the slightest grade at 55mph requires dropping into 4th to maintain speed even with the 265’s. And starts arent near as simple as the 1st and 2nd gens IMO it takes more throttle management for sure. I want to be able to make good use of 1st through 6th.

But you may be right, And 4.88’s would put me around the same shift points as a 1st gen 2.7 5 speed. At 6k rpm 1st would be around 36 or so, and 2nd would be around 60, 3rd- 89. That would be on par with the older gens with 4:10’s (if I remember correctly) and I had never had any troubles in the woods with any of my 1st gens. They were perfect IMO.

Do you happen to have 4.88’s?

Really? I was under the impression that only the off roads got the bigger diff/housing. I’ve never bothered to measure it. But now I’m getting that itch to start beefing up the drivetrain. If it’s as poor as the factory 3rd gen clutches are then I’m in trouble. My driveshaft has a terrible amount of slop in it already due to the boot on the splines getting ripped off. So I’m assuming it’s pretty soft material.

I’ve been afraid to look into drivetrain issues other than the leaking rear diff, seems like once I’m aware of common problems they start happening to me.

I have 33’s and stock gears. I don’t live in the mountains, but I do tow a 2300lb boat. I make use of all the gears.

Is that due to the stock intake ducting being gone? I’ve got a cai, I wanted to be able to get to my plugs without having to uncover it first. I’m curious about that pro charger kit, but it’s a bit more $$$.

Ov’s tt project is still chugging along. Everything ov related has been moved to his forum on the vf tuner website. I guess he isn’t allowed to use tw forums anymore. Nothing he did, but I beleive it’s due to all the bs that seemed to plague every ovtune thread haha

It’s been discussed several times before but I can not find a decent thread tonight. I never read if the housing is any bigger but I have read that the ring gear is bigger.

Yes, the housing is larger to accommodate the larger ring gear. The axles are also 32 spline.
