Super helpful to have your pics for reference. I’ll get out there later tonight and get some measurements.

Found a 07 4runner complete rear axle for $350 (FJ80 rear disc are impossible to find). ~65" WMS (63" front, may just run spacers) with disc and internal drum parking brake which i want to retain. Anyone gone down this path with advice?

4th Gen 4R rear are decent because of the disc/drum combo but they're still a semi floating axle. You want a FF because the load is not on the axle like a semi. Semi bearing is position at the tube end vs a FF with spindle.

And if you by chance grenade on the trail, changing a shaft or third member will be so much easier and less of a mess. You'll thank yourself later.

As you know, the 9.5 can handle abuse.

If it was easier to find (closest is 1k miles away, and $1k) I 100% agree and I'd definitely go full float. I've broken older ifs rear shafts on the trail with 40's and it does suck. I'm hoping with only 37's i can keep a semi float reliable.

With 1" spacers up front, 4th gen rear, and 3.5" bs wheels this thing is gonna be wide for yota axles.

4th gen 4runner axle will be an 8” diff, people grenade them pretty regularly in mildly built 4Runners and GXs but that’s partially high mileage units with loose crush sleeves. The only upgrade with that axle is the width and the brakes. A slightly stronger option is from a 5th gen 4runner/ GX460/ 11(?) + FJ with the 8.2 rear diff.

The FF 80 axles still have a weak link where the axle flange bolts to the wheel hub, it can be remedied by installing larger studs or bolts and eliminating the cone washer, but it will never be as strong as a 1 ton FF due to the smaller wheel bore and those bolts being on a narrower diameter.

Great info, thank you! Any axle I end up with will get a arb with solid spacer. The width, rear disc, and internal drum brake are a good upgrade from the stock rear. I’ll look for a 5th gen or fj80 rear in the meantime, but seems like the 4th gen is a good compromise in my situation.

That’s a great price! The only full floats near me are 800 miles away and $800 for the rear only.

Damn. Yea, you’re out there. May be worth checking car-part and seeing if anyone would ship. I found a set in MI that would ship. $1k for the set plus 250 to ship, but they were rusted as fuck.

I’ve asked a couple so far and it’s more than it’s worth. I’ll keep looking in the mean time and pick up that 4th gen rear just in case. They used to be super easy to find.

07 4runner axle is going in the rear. I want rear disc, width, and maybe a parking brake.

They're good. Had them on my 83. Carry good weight and decent flex. They're cheap too.

$100, can’t beat the price. I’ll have almost 10x the price of the rear in the front. Good to hear they should work out well!

Got all the steering parts. If the stock pitman arm isn’t magically off the box tomorrow I’ll be cutting it off.
