Just had a bit of a problem in the hills far from home. Truck wouldn’t come out of 4 low after trying everything. Finally crept to town 3.5 hours later and found a video about what to do. Removed acuator and pushed rod into 2wd. Pretty simple took 15 minutes. Thank god for this forum and YouTube. Anyway got thinking if any of you have ever installed an actual 4WD lever like old school and got rid of actuator. 2016 Taco here. Thank you Tacoma world folks for all your help over the years!!

Never heard of it yet. The actuator has contacts and thus communicates with the 4X4 ECU so if you removed all that the lights on the dash would be in conflict and perhaps the ADD would not move either. Something to study.

I have not seen anyone simply add a lever. There have been a number of people swapping in FJ cruiser manual shift cases though. I’d love to do that but too much work for my use case and now I’m not planning on keeping the truck anyways.

Not a fan of electronic shift. I really think it is a solution looking for a problem, and it introduced more problems than it solved. Nobody wanting a 4x4 truck was begging to get rid of the manual shift lever.
