Deep breath. Civil discussion :). I was referencing an anecdote. I don't know which tows better. Again, I was suggesting it may not be cut and dry as you stated. If you read the whole conversation the guy with a new Ridgeline (AT) rated to tow 5000 pounds felt it towed better than his MT Tacoma. An anecdote is intended to make rational people ponder their positions. Just another side. It's all good my friend.

Me neither. AT Pro, like the crawl control, no particular issues with the trans.
I have an audi s5 with v8 Manual- now that's a different story. Driving to Walmart turn into days of thunder daydreams.

As technology improves, ATs are fast becoming preferred over MTs. On my fire department ALL of our apparatus have automatic Allison transmissions... there's obviously a reason for this.

Respectfully, your anecdote reference is lazy. Apples and oranges. I've pulled my trailer with my dad's ecoboost AT... pulls better than my MT. But that's got little to do with the transmission. Apples and oranges.

The OP wanted to know about a MT vs AT Tacoma. I've towed with an AT Tacoma and a MT Tacoma, and the MT Tacoma IS the better pull vehicle, based on gearing alone. It is certainly NOT the better daily driver, as is clearly evident.

Oh TW, you are an odd place. Guy A asks for opinion. Guy B gives opinion. Guy A says thank you. Guy C explains why they're both wrong and that they should all go buy a Honda.

You initiated this back and forth, and you admitted you were trying to upset the "chestbeaters."

There's really no need to say any more than that.

Crawl control seemed like a consolation prize to me not getting a manual. I've only used it a handful of times, mostly out of curiosity. The time I needed it for necessitiy to get out of some mud, it didn't do very well. That's when a good samaritan Jeep came to the rescue.

LA rush hour traffic and riding the clutch a few feet at a time, been there done that. Stuff like this makes me appreciate the AT.

Having visited SF with an MT, I know what you mean. The best part is when you have to make a stop and take off on a hill. Some ass clown (usually with an expensive luxury car) rides your bumper and honks when your car creeps back a fraction of an inch before the clutch kicks in. I do miss slamming gears on the freeway on ramps though...

I'm not too proud to admit using the parking brake on steep hills in my MT Tacoma with a car right on my tail. Release PB same time disengaging clutch with minimal backward movement

Any idea who'd be in the wrong (legally speaking) in the event of such a collision?
I mean, the car behind you is obligated to maintain a safe "following distance" (though I doubt if that ever applies to stopped traffic) and you'd technically be running into him.
But you'd think if he's so close that you can't reasonably engage your transmission safely there must be some application of common sense in the law.
It HAS to have happened. Somewhere.

After 4 weeks of recovery from torn labrum and rotator cuff surgery, my next vehicle will definitely be an automatic.

I started driving my wife's automatic Land Cruiser at 2 weeks recovered but haven't been able to drive my manual FJ until week 4.

Manuals are fun until you get an injury that prevents you from driving.

Sorry to hear about the injury, hope you're on the mend soon.

That's one of the reasons I don't look for manuals anymore, age and injury takes its toll. With my daily commute sometimes including miles of stop and go traffic 3-5 days a week, I no longer enjoy it in a daily driver. I only take the manual car when I know for sure traffic will be light; lately it's been limited to short runs on the weekends now.
