I've got a 2018 DCSB MT TRDOR. I want to purchased an aftermarket exhaust. In my research I've found Borla, MBRP, AFE and Flowmaster. Each of these manufacturers make grandiose claims about increase in power and torque. I'm looking for one which doesn't have highway drone since I do a lot of highway driving. I'm looking for a nice low (g)rumble when I floor it, and that can elicit those wonderful crackles and pops, when I downshift. My questions:

    • What are you all running and what are your thoughts on the setup you're running? Vids/sound clips would be nice.
    • How does different diameter 2, 2.5, 3" etc affect performance?
    • Are you really getting increased HP and torques?
    • Recommendations?

I am running the Borla Cat-Back. I don’t notice any extra power, but is sounds great to me.

If you want power and torque, skip the muffler and get Ovtune.

I think Borla sounds the best.

Magnaflow 3 inch pipe. It has a nice deep throaty sound. Doesn’t drown out the cab.

I haven’t changed my exhaust, but I’ve read a lot that moving to a 3” pipe feels like a loss in torque. The engine needs some back pressure to function properly. Do a lot of research before moving to a larger pipe.

I've had the Magnaflow, too much drone. Noticeable increase in upper RPM powerband, noticeable loss at low end, which sucks because thats where the majority of city and traffic driving is done. Also too much drone, but sound is nice.

Switched to a Flowmaster 50 delta. No drone, no power increase at top end though, still some noticeable loss below 3k RPM. Sound was great though, nice burble and pops between shifts and while engine braking. No drone and sound level is like stock on highway. Perfect for a daily. Not certain but power loss may have been related to the inlet/outlet size on the muffler, the installer didnt match the stock size of piping.

Also worth noting, some people with the Magnaflow say it has no drone, they typically tend to be DCLB people. The DCLB catback has an extra resonator can, the DCSB is jut pipe and a 18" muffler.

As stated earlier, if you want power the only way is to go OVTune, or technically, re gear.

OP, if drone is a concern, I’d be very careful about touching the factory exhaust.

We all have different levels of sensitivity to different sound frequencies. What one person finds perfectly acceptable another doesn’t.

Also, half the time recorded sound clips don’t sound anything like the real thing.

Finally, V6 are not the best sounding motors. It is very difficult to get a V6 to sing beautifully; V8 engines are the exact opposite.

Automakers go through great lengths to come up with an exhaust system that suits all types of hearing, driving conditions and regulations. Usually, the manufacturer’s own accessory exhaust —in this case TRD’s, offers a bit more sound without compromising too much on all the other variables.

If all you want is a little more growl without drone, also consider an air intake. It’s much cheaper and easier to undo if you don’t like it.

    Good luck.

Running 3 in mbrp cat back. HP gains? Dont dream about it. There's a bit of drone on highway. Cracking? Its a v6 truck not a civic. Sounds decent again it's a v6 never going to get v8 rumble

Black widow. No drone. Sounds different then all the other exhaust options. Some hate it some love it.

I've put exhausts on every vehicle I've ever had. My exhaust shop, Ranch Muffler in Temecula, is a great shop. I spent a while talking to the shop owner and he said he hasn't found a single exhaust that sounds good with these engines. He brought up the drone issue primarily, but that the engine and exhaust design isn't complimentary to aftermarket exhausts.

I begrudgingly took his advice and then just had a nice black double walled tip welded on in place of the chrome clamp on tip.

Drill a hole in your exhaust and save a ton of money.

I have not heard a single aftermarket exhaust yet I that would pay for. Only thing I did is an axle dump cut once I got my high clearance bumper.

Just throw on an exhaust cutout from QTP...that way you can have your noise at touch of a button.

this is true, for crackle and pop, which is totally possible on this motor, you need to open the exhaust flow with a media-less system. you will need to remove the rear cats and the factory muffler at a minimum, and you'll need to replace the muffler with an open flow style such as Spintech. the absorption media in the cats and muffler eat all that sound. remove those and have the rest flowing well and you'll have that sound, but then you'll also have to deal with the V6 rasp and drone... which you can deal with via piping and resonators.

as for the mid-pipe, you'll want that a 3" pipe for depth on this motor or you'll be staying with the very buzzy V6 sound from a 2.5" mid pipe.

Be happy you took his advice. Best option is to keep stock and just have the tip of your choice welded to factory setup.
