@PB FAB Thank you for the detailed write up. I am at 51K miles and am using a scan tool OBD Fusions similar to Torque Pro to check the temperature of the transmission. Should I be focused on the temperature noted A/T Oil Temp No. 1 for the pan fluid temperature as opposed to the A/T Oil Temp No. 2 for torque converter temperature when check the transmission fluid level?

According to the manual At temp no 1 you have to monitor

I did the drain change by pulling the return hose to the trans. I did it both to my 2nd gen (250k) and the third gen. They both run and shift great. ran about 10-11 qts each time to get a good red clear color oil.

Hi - i know this is an old thread, but it has great info I would like to add to.

I found a 2018 Taco with low miles and had been reading the threads about the 2016 - 2018 Tacos being 1 qt low. A local transmission specialist confirmed that Toyota and Ford are notorious for being 1qt low from the factory…. Follow the $, they save millions on 1qt low…

The first thing I did was drop the oil into a measuring container. Sure enough, 1+ qts low (photo attached). This is my first Taco, and I love it. However, if you are waiting 30,000 or more miles running 1 qt low, who knows what long term damage is being done…

I just got my Taco used and will be changing the tranny fluid this spring with Amsoil. I have used it in my 4th gen 4runner for almost 200k miles and it is fantastic stuff. I first changed it with 100k on it and then again at 200k miles. At the second change the oil literally still looked like new. Now with almost 275k on it the tranny still shifts smooth as silk. I will use nothing but Amsoil fluids in my stuff. . . . . . .been using it for about 30 years.

i've had great experiences with amsoil in my past vehicles. just recently did a drain and fill with the Idemitsu full-synthetic WS stuff (was on sale and didn't feel like paying twice as much for amsoil). trans shifts a lot smoother surprisingly. only 15k miles on my transmission. Got 5 quarts of the idemitsu ATF for $33 with NAPA coupon.

Are we not suppose to replace the filter and gasket?

Well, Toyota states it is lifetime fluid but many of us change it regularly. If you do change relatively frequently you theoretically wouldn’t need to change the mesh screen/filter because there shouldn’t be any contamination like there would be if you left the fluid to degrade.

The guy commenting immediately before you only has 15k miles.

I drain and refill every third engine oil change. It’s neither expensive or difficult to do- so why not give your truck some love.

Tell me you do not understand automatic transmissions without telling me you do not understand automatic transmissions.

    You have...
    1. Fluid in the Tq converter
    2. Fluid in the valve body
    3. Fluid in the clutches and bands within the trans
    4. Fluid in the trans cooler
    5. Fluid in the lines to and from cooler
    6. Fluid in the trans pan
The majority of the fluid is in numbers 1-5. Watch this video from start to end, you'll have a much better understanding of trans fluid changes.

Edit: in your quote you are only impacting #6 which is ~ 2-3 quarts. The flush is for 1-6. You're pushing new fluid throughout the system so no old stuff is left.

60K Dealer service and they only charged for 5 quarts of AT fluid. Reading capacity is 10L. Did they just do some drain and replace what was drained and not in the system. Probably?

Hard to say, but that's probably the most likely scenario.
You're never going to get ALL of the fluid out, which is why people do a few cycles of drain and fill. But if I remember right, I usually get ~3 quarts out on each drain cycle, so 5 sounds a little random.
