Today I resolved my difficulties. I discovered that my "no fluid came out of the 5mm overflow plug problem" when trying to determine if the factory filled these transmission correctly could be resolved by merely adding 1/3rd of a quart to the original factory fill. When I did that fluid came gushing out. So the factory only barely underfilled the 2021 & '2022's - on the order of around 4 - 8 ounces - not enough to be of concern.

So...you finally followed the procedure and all is good.
If you had not deviated from the procedure and not made assumptions about the expansion of fluid, you could have saved yourself some hassle. You are also assuming the level of the '21 based on your experience with the '22.
Glad it worked out for you...finally.

Checked mine…the factory fill was at the proper level. The amount of fluid used from the quart I added was negligible due to how minor it was. Process was very simple to complete.

What temp does the fluid need to be at for a check, is it 95-115 or something like that? I am doing a full fluid exchange next spring, did it in my 4runner a couple times and it is very easy. The temp check range is enough that an infared scan tool works good.

Let's say you messed this process up by not adding a quart to begin with but added fluid until it went to a slow leak at full temp. Then went to check on it a few hundred miles later and only got about 1.3 quarts out the second time.....

IMO - if you didn’t feel any unusual shifting behaviors during those few hundred miles, you’re good.
    Glad you caught it

I’m a bit confused. Per the provided table for the 2GR-FKS the fluid for a drain and refill (3.3 qt) is more than for the pan removal (2.5 qt). How is this so?

No idea. Perhaps folks with TIS access can pull the most recent revision if available. This on from 2016

I followed the process but just get the blinking D, have had truck off for like 2 hours now (thought that meant it was over temp).

It can take several hours for the fluid to cool down, so it sounds like your fluid temp might still be too hot to start the Level-Check Procedure.
    :notsure:

Still too hot; do a practice run in the morning with the procedure. 95-113 degrees is not very hot, your body temperature norm is 98.6. The transmission is a big chunk of metal and the fluid has a lot of thermal mass as well.

So I waited until this morning and it finally cooled down. Problem is I can't get the plug with the 5 mm hex out and I think I stripped it.
