If l recall correctly most of the failures seem to be during warm weather.

I would not think so, it was mainly a 16 issue then they redesigned the sensor, think only 2 guys on here with 17s had a failure, you can always carry a spare if you venture off the beaten path.

I see a few places to order the part number (90919-05089) online, but how do you know that you are getting the new or "enhanced" version? Don't wanna spend 100 rocks to only be getting the shitty version again. Honestly, this pisses me off that I have to spend $100 just for a piece of mind. My truck is not my daily driver and the only time I drive it is to get out of town and camp or hit some remote surf spot. 90+% of the time I use my truck, there is no cell service. Complete horseshit! -end of rant.

Anyone know how difficult this is to replace? Write-ups or videos available?

No problem! As a member who is relatively new, the search function only works well if you know what you're searching for. Otherwise, there is so much junk you have to filter through. That's why all the seasoned guys on here are able to find stuff so much quicker because they can recall which thread they had seen it at one time or another. I usually don't get my panties in a bunch when someone posts something that has been talked about because not everyone spends 16 hours on here. So cheers and hopefully you never have to use the write up...

Is there a way to identify the new CPS from the old? I have an early 17 so might see which I have if its possible.

An easy way to confirm if you have the new CPS installed or not is to disconnect the harness and use your smartphone to snap a photo.

    No hash marks = bad
    Hash marks = good

Great to know, so just to clarify.. your picture is of a good one, since it has the "hash" marks, right?

    Yes sir!

I should mention the rubber boot protecting the harness makes disconnecting it from the CPS a bitch to release. Go gentle. The tab to release the harness is located on the left side of the CPS. One member here pulled the wires out of his and ended up having to solder everything back together.

:ohsnap: good to know! I do not want that headache! Plus, I would be uber pissed if that happened while repairing a truck still under warranty with 3400 miles on it on my dime because of a faulty part.

I got a call directly from the NHTSA today. They are on the case for the CPs sensor. They said they are taking to Toyota about this issue and wanted to know if they can share my VIN with Toyota.

I would encourage others who have had the CPS problem to write a NHTSA complaint so we can hardball Toyota into recalling and fixing this issue. It might save a Tacoma or even a life from ruin.

Haven't they already corrected it by providing a new part?

Not determined all trucks made before April 16 have bad CPS, only that they have the old version of the part. It may not be all old parts are bad, just a certain supplier or date of manufacture of the parts are bad. So far they've been replacing those bad under warranty.

AFAIK you don't know you have a bad part until it's failed and unless 100s have failed Toyota will still replace on case by case basis. They might issue a TSB to look for the old part to expedite diagnostics of a truck that comes in with symptoms but to replace tens of thousands because it might fail may be just wishful thinking.

Like it or not if you're worried replace the part or carry a spare; if going off the beaten path definitely carry one just like you would tools, commuication device, tow straps, spare tire and gas.

When I changed mine I had trouble getting the connector off while the sensor was still in place in the engine block, so I pulled the sensor out first then disconnected the connector. Easy peasy.

I would advice anyone who’s got and early model or old cps sensor version and is concerned with failure to just replace it.
The failure ratio is much too high for my comfort level and if you do a little reasoning with the numbers.
Talk to the dealer and see if they can match the part price online or come close after online shipping costs.
I can’t imagine labor being an hr since its only about a 10 minute job, with most of that time spent trying to disconnect the plug, but if so, plead for mercy there too, you may find it.
But if you do decide to sweat it out and let them replace it, when it fails, remember to stay calm and don’t force it down the road. Simply pull over asap and shut it off for an hr to save those cat convertors and it may start again and run long enough to get somewhere safe.

    Be safe!
    Cheers!

Sounds like a good idea, can possibly save someones life if their truck failed on the interstate.
