When the automatic brakes come on for being close to another vehicle when in cruise control that does not activate the brake lights. Found this out today at my first maintenance at the dealer, wow how stupid is that. However you can turn off that default type of cruise by pressing and holding the on/off cruise switch which will switch you over to standard cruise without the auto braking, much better.

Seems normal to me. The brake lights don’t flash when I engine brake either...

Only speaking about when your in cruise and you get a little close to the vehicle in front of you and the automatic brakes slow you down a bit, that does not activate the brake lights.

    Welcome to the forum.

It is my understanding that the brake lights DO activate during automatic braking.

BTW, the radar cruise control is one of my favorite things about TSS. I think the naysayers would agree if they put a little effort into learning how to use it.

I think he is referring to the truck slowing down to increase the distance between vehicles. This is not braking, this is easing up on the accelerator. Everything is normal here, move along people

Nah, he specifically mentioned automatic braking, vs standard cruise control.

But he said if you turn off the dynamic cruise control it won’t do the thing anymore. I am pretty sure he has no idea what he is trying to say, but he means that the dynamic cruise control slows you down using coasting (like all cruise control) and won’t activate the brake lights. It’s not using the brakes that’s why! If it was an emergency stop activated by TSS then the brakes lights do come on. Make sense?

It’s not stupid at all. If you’re one of those people that hits their brakes every time you want to disengage cruise control on the highway then YOU are the problem...that’s what causes accidents and traffic to back up behind you.

When using cruise it’s easy to push the lever straight in to deactivate cruise without hitting the brakes or bringing on the brake lights but you guys already knew that

Simply people using incorrect terms that’s all. By law if the brakes are applied (by human, computer, space alien) the brake lights have to come on. It’s that simple. Letting off the gas is NOT braking. If TSS cruse lets off the gas, no brake lights, if TSS has to apply brakes, then brake lights will light up.

I was just going by what the service writer said, I don’t step on the brakes to disengage the cruise I use the cruise lever. I personally don’t care for that auto braking in the cruise mode anyway and am glad I found out how to shut off that off, just the normal style of cruise is fine with me.

Had a friend follow me this morning to see what really happens, and the brake lights DO NOT COME ON when the system senses you are getting to close to a person in front of you or someone makes a sudden turn in front of you, you can certainly feel brakes being activated. We were on the phone as this was going on, and yes we were using blue tooth.

Another visit to the dealer is obviously in order to see if everything is in order and my Tacoma is working fine.

The list is long but distinguished
    Yes.
    From the Owners Manual:

    Selecting constant speed control mode

When constant speed control mode is selected, your vehicle will maintain a set speed without controlling the vehicle-to-vehicle distance. Select this mode only when vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode does not function correctly due to a dirty radar sensor, etc.

    1. With the cruise control off, press and hold the “ON-OFF” button for 1.5 seconds or more.

Immediately after the “ON-OFF” button is pressed, the radar cruise control indicator will come on. Afterwards, it switches to the cruise control indicator.

Switching to constant speed control mode is only possible when operating the lever with the cruise control off.

    2. Accelerate or decelerate, with accelerator pedal operation, to the desired vehicle speed (at or above approximately 25 mph [40 km/h]) and push the lever down to set the speed.

Cruise control “SET” indicator will come on.
The vehicle speed at the moment the lever is released becomes the set speed.

Adjusting the speed setting: P. 272
Canceling and resuming the speed setting: P. 265
