so I shopped my 2016 Tacoma around for trade in value. TRD DCSB AT With 18k on the clock. I paid $100 over invoice which was about $36,500 at the time. The highest offer I got was at Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa Ca - $31k. According to this dealership they are selling well below invoice to move units, like $2k under invoice. I'm not sure I buy it but if anyone is looking to buy you might want to check with the fleet manager at Freeman.

Other offer from Carmax was $30,459. More depreciation than I expected. Please chime in on your experiences, especially with 2nd gen value. Is third gen depreciating faster due to market saturation and poor reviews?

First year of depreciation is always the worst. I agree with Hutch, I think it will likely be a similar trade in value for the next few years.
Also, considering dealers add in the neighborhood of $5k to a trade in value to arrive at their sale price, I don't think you'll do much better.

Trade in value is a whole different animal than resale value. You're looking to lose $4,500 on whats about to become a two year old vehicle now so what's the big deal?

First year depreciation is always the biggest hit because it goes from "new" to "used" the second you take it off the lot. Regardless of mileage you'll see a few thousand dollar drop within the first year but over time the tacomas will slowly depreciate from here on. If you check next year you'll likely see 30k or so.

Not saying it's a big deal, curious how this depreciation compares to 2nd gen trucks people bought new and how it relates to long term 3rd gen resale. I'm losing the taco either way. Minivans drive better. No I don't have OV tune

I think that's the thing is trade in you will always lose some money over what it is truly worth. To find the true value I would use KBB, Black Book, and NADA.

The Tacoma has the highest residual value after three years of any vehicle at around 73% of initial cost. What are your expectations of price when wanting to trade after one model year? The price offered from dealer seems fine to me of about 80% or so. First year is the big.hit.

KBB and black book is about $33,500. If dealers are really selling at $2k (and I'm not saying they are) under invoice a new truck would only be $34,500.

Freeman is a shit dealership for sales.

Do you have to trade in as opposed to a private party sale?

Agreed, best offer is from Toyota to trade in toward a Tundra. I'm sure I can get a better offer or expect to pay under invoice on a Tundra

No I don't have to trade in, it's just easier. Looking for a quick way out of the taco

You're in a lull period right now too. All the local Toyota dealers are sitting on new Tacoma's and they're not moving as fast as they were when they were new releases.

Hansel in Petaluma has SR5 Tundra's on clearance.

I have a great sales person if you're interested, or a friend who's internet manager.

When I was looking at getting a truck I went to look at a used one and they ended up making me a better deal on a new one. I don't know if the used was inflated or what but the new was under invoice.

Freeman has dozens of new tacos on the back lot, it's no wonder they don't want mine. I guess it's possible they are selling well below invoice to clean out inventory. If you think that their sales team is bad you should try their service department!

I have. Had to buy my 4Runner from Freeman in Feb and they tried to fuck me on service also.

Hansel in Petaluma is the only dealership worth going to. Sales and service are great. The foreman at the repair center is the real deal.

Have a great team up there if you know who to talk to.

Trade in or car max values are comparing your initial retail price to a non retail number.

You'll do better selling a number between private party but under retail.

People with tales of trade ins close to what they paid either got a great purchase initally or they are overpaying for their new purchase. Or a combo thereof. Trade in numbers are a classic shell game.
