I just got the service done at the dealership and it looks like they mixed LSD oil in my rear deferential! According to what I have read here the TRD OR does not need that! Will it though hurt my differential in any kind of way?

Not in the least. It's just a total waste of the LSD additive. Make sure they didn't charge you for it.

They sure did charge me for it but I was more worried about actual damage!

What's a TRD OR? By LSD fluid do you mean rear differential limited slip differential fluid? Excuse my ignorance.

My 2016 TRD sport has four wheel drive with a limited slip rear differential in the rear differential if that's any help.

He's referring to a TRD off road (TRD OR). Our sports don't have a real LSD. It's all electronic.

08 or 09 was the last of the true limited slip rears with clutch packs in the TRD Sport.

But whether electronic or mechanical etc a limited slip rear works the same right? As I understand it when one wheel turns faster than the other complimentary side, maybe 100 rpm faster either or any device provides a normally open rear differential to engage the slower turning side to make up for the less than 100% total traction required along the axle. Like the closed old positraction but only part time as necessary.

I'm unclear as the exact methods used to accomplish this but I assume it's like a clutch with synchros???
    Thanks for the clarification

No, checking or replacing with OEM or OEM equivalent fluids will not "void" warranty.

No. As long as all necessary or other maintenance is done to spec by you or a local mechanic shop your warranty still is intact. Save all receipts! Dannyblues

Totally different, clutch packs are mechanical, the simulated stuff now uses electronics to apply the brakes or cut engine power.

That's how yours is different, instead of a real normal limited slip diff, yours electronically senses the wheel slip and the computer applies brakes to the spinning wheel so the other wheel can get traction and the power isn't wasted at the corner that is slipping. The clutch style is more like the old school posi traction and are much better imo.

Did my rear end yesterday @ 11.3k miles. Was a little low, couldn't get my pinky on any oil. Oil looked pretty clean surprisingly. Not like OPs. Magnet did it's job and had some decent flakes on it. Took a full 4 qts to refill. Should be good to go for 30k now. Will do the front soon though I doubt it needs it.

It's odd how different trucks wear different (we should have the same diff, mine without e locker obviously). Curious as to the build date on yours.

WOW!!! I had no idea the limited slip on my 2016 TRD works like that! That's only the traction control using the ABS system!!! Better than nothing but I find it outrageous that Toyota lists my TRD as having a limited slip rear! It's a bait and switch at best and intentionally misleading. It's like without being a modern day master mechanic you don't even know what the hell you bought. Thanks. Needless to say I'm disappointed in toyota.

I had a 2006 Sonata that the dealer assured me had the modern equivalent of a real limited slip front wheel drive that delivered power equally between both front wheels or distributed it from the spinning wheel on ice to the opposite wheel.
One day my right drive wheel spun on ice going up a hill. I waited for the limited slip to kick in. The ESC light came on and with my foot pinning the throttle down I disengaged the ESC. The right front tire had come to a dead stop so I again expected the LSD to engage. Instead the front one wheel only drive wheel spun back to life at full throttle and pulled me sideways into a ditch.
That's when I learned about traction control and electronic stability control

By the way forget about stopping on a bumpy decline with ABS brakes
In the past before ABS I could lock up the wheels and they would hop up and down over the bumps and grab and skid my old van to a stop
With ABS I tried it on the same bumpy decline and blew right through the intersection. The tires wouldn't lock up or grab and skid as the old style did when they bounced back down on the bumpy blacktop

Several times a week I drive by a rusting early 1950's Chevy pickup sitting in the tall grass along the front of a local home.
If I had the money I'd buy and restore that old truck and be done with all this new technology
I'm old. I love the old stuff I grew up with and except for the medical advances mostly I could do without all of it.
