Don't know if this is relevant, I was searching for front rotor diameter and found out that it's the same size for all trims on the 3rd Gen, 10.8"

Given the torque spec range, get a 3/8 Inch torque wrench. 1/2 inch is a bit too big for the low torque drain plug.

I've had good luck with GearWrench torque wrenches. I have their 1/4" and 3/8" ones and they've done well. I'm picking up a 1/2" soon to replace a cheaper 1/2" that I don't like too much.

Is there a problem with using a half inch adapter on a 3/8 torque wrench. Just realized majority of my sockets are 1/2 but bought a 3/8 torque wrench

You should never use an adapter or extension with a torque wrench. It will affect the reading.

I have two of the tekton torque wrenches from Amazon, one low range (in-lb) and one high range, like the one you're thinking of getting. I really like them and feel they are a good quality wrench; also can't beat the price.

I have a tiny Tekton (1/4" drive) I got off Amazon for doing the torques on my bike (important for carbon stuff ...), and I have nothing but good things to say about it ... I'd never heard of the brand, but it had high reviews on Amazon, and it's been good for me.

How does it affect torque if it doesn't change the torque arm? Not doubting ya, I've just never seen this before and would like to know for my own sake. You definitely can't add a crow's foot or something like that since it changes the torque arm distance without calculating the change. Most torque wrench "manuals" talk about this and have a template formula for this scenario. I've always use extensions/adapters as needed.

I'm probably a bit more anal about this than most as I have rebuilt a few engines in my time and some of the torque specs are fairly critical. Also, when I mentioned extensions I wasn't implying the type that extend the axis outward. Those extensions can be used with the formulas you mention above (example: http://www.dmctools.com/Products/torque_conversion_charts.html ). You will find a lot of people who believe that a vertical extensions (ones that give you more depth on the same axis) do not affect the torque applied to the bolt or nut. That's not true because there is some amount of the torque being applied to the extension itself - twisting it like a clock spring is the best analogy that I can think of. You can try this for yourself by using a long (at least 6") extension to torque something down to, say 100 lbs. Then take the extension off and do the same thing. You should find that it tightens a bit more more. Rather than get into a scientific or religious argument with anyone, for general purposes on u-joint bolts, lug nuts, exhaust connections, headers, etc. using an 3/8-1/2 adapter isn't going to make any real difference. Plus or minus a couple of pounds on an 80 pound lug nut doesn't mean the wheel will come off or you will warp something.

Use the shortest adapter you can find. It will work fine!

Thanks, makes sense, I'll have to experiment like you're talking about. But yeah, sometimes you just need an extension, so I guess you just do the best you can. Using a torque wrench even with inaccuracy still probably closer than anything I used to do by feel.

Okay, so I finally made my purchase and ended up with a 4Runner instead of a Tacoma. Since this forum is still a valuable resource, I don't mind keeping this thread up-to-date to try and give back, but obviously I would probably not be the best person to do that. If anybody wants to copy and paste the original post for a new thread to maintain, just let me know.

Was completely in anticipation of buying, getting ready for a new vehicle, even got the manuals from TIS. A lot of the info was duplicate from my Highlander so not really much time at all invested yet.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect they will be. Wasn't got put any part #'s in the original post until it gets confirmed by somebody with a receipt or the websites start updating their databases with the 2016 model info.

So is there a specific way to change the filter? I ordered all of the parts I need for when I hit 5000 miles here in about a month. Same concept as a usual oil filter except I am just replacing the filter in the housing?
