Auto headlights are part of the premium technology package on the 17. OP's truck must not have that, hence the confusion.

Ahh, I thought the LED DRL's were part of that, guess not?

You wouldn't think it would be a big problem to just turn a knob but it's so bad in New Brunswick. they recently had to pass a law to ensure all drivers have at least lights on the front at all times, can be DRL's or headlights. in I think 2020, taillights also will be required to be lit at all times. this applies while the vehicle is in use on the road. The problem is some vehicles have the dash lights on when the vehicle is running so when it gets dark, a driver may forget because he has no visual reminder that he is running with just DRLs or nothing in some cases. I'm not sure if it is going to help much, my Taco is inferno orange and within the first 2 weeks of having it i was almost side swiped by a car. I said to myself, how can you NOT see the orange 4x4 especially as i was was probably 4 feet ahead of him.

Most likely because he was “texting” at the time. I see it all the time on the road. Drives me nuts. Worse than drunk driving.

I found this thread looking for DRL mods but this doesn’t address it. Our LED DRL’s are bright while the headlights are off but when the headlights turn on the DRL’s dim and I can’t understand why.

Does anyone know of mod to prevent to DRL’s from dimming while the headlights are on?

Yes they can be rewired to do that. But they dim for a reason. Unlike the headlights (where the light has a cutoff) the DRL optics let light shine everywhere. ...Which could be distracting/obnoxious to oncoming traffic at night(given how bright they are just in the day)

You DO know what the "D" stands for in
    DRL right?

We’ll at one time daytime running lights we’re not intended to be very brightat all. My 4th Gen 4Runner had them and they were just orange markers designed to be seen when the headlights were off and wouldn’t illuminate any sort of path of light. They were called DRL too. So daylight having nothing to do with lumen output.

That being said Tesla, BMW, Jeep and Honda have very bright LED DRL’s during the day and lose no luminosity output at night with their headlights on. So I fail to see how me wanting to increase my light output for sub standard projectors is any different from what other automakers are already doing.

So does anyone helpful have a link to this mod? Thanks!

This isn’t true. My X5 has the led halos and the little strip above them, and they dim when the headlights come on.

I'm pretty sure every car that has factory DRL's dim when the headlights turn on.. I had a BMW 335i before my taco and the LED halo DRL's would dim significantly at night.

So what if you just used a wire with two flat terminals in place of the relay to jump the DRL circuit? Wouldn't that accomplish the same thing? Or would that result in a constant on for the DRLs regardless of shutting off the truck?

Also isn't the black wire you ran to the chassis redundant? Wouldn't that terminal on the relay already be grounded or otherwise hooked up to batt neg?

Don't mean to second guess your efforts, just trying to understand how this all works!

Could it be just a different relay in Canada? Like a n/c relay where in the us its n/o? Too simple?
