I have a 2019 TRD OR. It’s a 6sp. Whenever the engine is forced to work a bit, like trying to hold cruise control at 70mph up a rise in the highway, there is a definite feeling the engine is skipping or varying power output or sputtering - however you want to visualize it. I can buy non-ethanol gas and it will ALMOST go away, but really just disguises the issue. I’m so frustrated with this. Of course the dealer thinks I’m nuts and calling Toyota does nothing. The problem is real. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I'll be 80-85 on cruise up a hill and it'll skip / miss. I just let the engine eat, 5500 rpm and all. No idea if it's normal but it doesn't bother me much

Man...it bothers the heck out of me. If this truck was 4K not 40k I’d be less bothered!

@OVTune found that these engines are allowed a ton of pre-detonation under the factory PCM parameters. The info is somewhere in the 2700 page thread about the tune, or check his website blog, which is very informative.

Meh, it's just a quirk of this engine. There's people that have 200k in this engine already. Also, if u hit quote on the bottom right of my reply, it'll reply directly to me and tag me.

Have you tried different grades of gas, like mid grade, to see if it makes a difference?

oVtune might help. It's an ECU tune for this engine. Go to the main 3rd gen forum then use search, tons of data so prepare for a read.

Yes. I’ve tried all grades. The only significant difference is made with Ethanol Free, which is pricey and hard to find.

Mine does this on 87, but goes away on 93. Sucks to hear you weren't as lucky.

Does it happen whether or not you're using cruise control?

Could this just be a symptom of switching between Atkinson and Otto mode?

Coming from non-Toyota and now to this 2020 Tacoma you can definitely feel the different modes the engine has.
