I bought my truck before the 2020 came out, so I was very interested when @AKSig88 shared that the new head unit would support Carplay and would be compatible with older 3rd gens.

In the process of figuring out exactly what would be necessary to retrofit my truck from Entune 2.0 to Entune 3.0, I collected and learned a lot of information about the different head units. I could not find a terribly good summary at the time, so I thought I'd write some of what I learned. I'm including some speculative ideas in hopes that we can collaborate on clarifying these (I'll be checking in on this thread from time to time to update the summary posts). Either way, hopefully this helps those interested in swapping the OEM head units between trucks, whether retrofitting, downgrading, salvaging parts, etc.

Also, please don't use this thread for Entune bashing, especially of the folks who are discussing the retrofits and upgrades. There are plenty other threads for discussing aftermarket radios; this one is about the OEM head units.

The 3rd Gen Tacoma has been delivered with at least 8 different head units...

There are two major Entune versions in the 3rd Gen
    • Entune 2.0
      • 2016 - 2019
    • Entune 3.0
      • 2020 - 2024
      • Supports CarPlay and Android Auto

There are three (sort of four) major trim levels

    • Base aka "Entune Audio"
    • Plus aka "Entune Plus"
      • Navigation via Scout GPS app when conected to phone
    • Premium aka "Entune Premium"
      • ...which comes in either:
        • non-JBL (internal amplification)
        • JBL (external amplification, sub, etc.)
      • Integrated Navigation
      • Entune App Suite
      • Optional DCM aka Telematics Transceiver (Entune 3.0 only)

Other notes about the various head units and related parts:

    Cross-model hardware:
I think that the head units have more or less the same hardware as used in the Camry, Corolla, Sienna, RAV4, etc.

I installed a 2018 Sienna head unit in my 2019 Tacoma for a couple of months and it worked just the same as a 2022 Tacoma head unit. (Sienna had Entune 3.0 before Tacoma). I believe the Sienna in particular has the same engine as the Tacoma, not sure if this is a factor.

    Entune 2.0 vs 3.0 wiring:
The wiring (connectors) are completely different between 2.0 and 3.0 head units, however, the underlying wiring is mostly (maybe entirely?) compatible, and conversion harnesses can be made in either direction. More details in the post below about Entune 2.0 to Entune 3.0 conversion.

    Integrated Navigation
This is a completely separate computer, mounted right under the head unit. So if you're salvaging parts for integrated nav, you'll need both the head unit and the nav computer.

    • The Entune 2.0 and Entune 3.0 nav computers have completely different wiring. I don't think they're compatible.
    • The nav computers only work with the “Premium” head units. “Plus” and basic “Audio” will not connect to the nav computers

    Connected Services / Telematics
The DCM aka Telematics Transceiver is basically a cellular hotspot that enables what Toyota calls "Connected Services". This is an Entune 3.0 only feature. In the 2020 it's somewhere near the passenger footwell.
I don't know yet if or how well one would work in a pre-2020 vehicle in a retrofit type scenario.

Retrofitting Entune 2.0 to Entune 3.0

The main reasons for doing this are:
    * Support for Carplay and Android Auto
    * Upgraded integrated nav (Premium only)

What doesn’t work after the retrofit:
    * Trip history in the Eco app
    * Colors don’t match the center display

    What you need:
    * The head unit
    * Nav box specific to the head unit AND entune revision (if retrofitting a Permium head unit)
    * Two adapter harnesses; one for all of the power and signals, and another for the USB. Ideally you purchase as a kit and get both.
    * As of writing the only known sellers are autoharnesshouse and various eBay sellers.

    Other notes:
    * The harness needs to be matched to your hardware; ex JBL vs nonJBL, nav vs non nav, etc.
    * Check out the following thread for many TW users that have finished the retrofit:

New yes! From time to time folks sell pulls at reasonable prices after swapping their OEM units for aftermarket, and there is the salvage option too.

Indeed, just an observation on Toyota's parts pricing racket. $2500. is the discounted price for the 2.0 base model. Ranks right up there with the $275. 2018+ grille emblem. :der:

I will say the entune 3.0 is a little slower than the one in the 2015 I had.. but, the screen is much nicer

Thanks for all this info. I’m a complete dummy when it comes to these and was hoping you or someone on here could provide some guidance. I have a 2018 SR with a “bottom of the line” stereo. It has Bluetooth, cd and can be operated (Partly) using Controls on the steering wheel. It does not have GPS. I would like to replace it with something that has GPS. I called the stealership and they quoted me “over $5,000” for a direct Toyota replacement. No thanks.

Again, I’m really looking to only swap in something that has GPS. thoughts?? Thanks again.

Check the back connections on your head unit in comparison to the one you would like to purchase. There is a member right now selling an OEM premium HU at a very decent price. I had the 2.0 and now the 3.0 on my new Tacoma Sport and both are GREAT HU! @Nomad26

    Great write up so far.

but are you sure about this the below? At least on Entune 2.0 the unit under the main headunit is XM it has nothing to do with navigation.

    ——————————————————
    Integrated Navigation
This is a completely separate computer, mounted right under the head unit. So if you're salvaging parts for integrated nav, you'll need both the head unit and the nav computer.
The Entune 2.0 and Entune 3.0 nav computers have completely different wiring. I don't think they're compatible, but I can't say that with absolute certainty yet...

Good question. I was super confused about this going into the project and had basically the same question as you.

For Entune 2.0, Entune Plus (with Scout GPS), it has a unit under the main head unit that is XM just like you've described.

For Entune 3.0, Entune Plus (with Scout GPS), I'm pretty sure XM is integrated and doesn't even need extra box, but I don't have a subscription so I can only verify this with the trial.

Basically it comes down to there are different kinds of navigation; I'm specifically talking here about the integrated navigation that is standalone and doesn't need a phone to be paired with it etc. This is the Entune Premium box (both JBL and non-BPL), not Entune Plus. For this kind of navigation the box is separate AND the head unit is different, for both Entune 2.0 and 3.0.

Not sure if I can describe it better in the top post but would love some input on the wording if I can make it any more clear.

I think I have the Entune 3.0 Plus and I haven’t found a play/pause control I can use without switching screens in Carplay...anyone know of a way I can pause music with the map app still up?

If you are interested, I’m looking to go aftermarket in my 2020 and I’d be willing to part with the stock headunit. Ive got a 2020 limited with factory jbl. CarPlay.

I appreciate finding your forum thread on the Entune systems. I have more of a question about compatibility of models between years as my head unit (front - 57090 /rear - 86140-04130) on my 2014 totally failed (white screen). I've been looking on line for a replacement and found a used head unit (front - 510079 / rear - 86140-04040) for a reasonable price ($350) as opposed to Toyota's replacement cost of over $4200. The connectors on the back of the head unit (upper) and the radio unit (lower) are identically the same. Included a picture of the assembly below. Do you have any insight into the compatibility of these units in my 2014?

@IcemanPNW I have a 2018 sport with navigation. It’s Panasonic unit but part number is one number different from those listed out above. My Part Number: 86100-04162

I know it’s not JBL so based on information in thread I assume it’s considered Entune 2.0 premium?

Yep, I can tell right away from the pics that’s Entune 2.0 and from the connectors it sure looks like non JBL with onboard nav which makes it the Premium.

Your head unit has the onboard navigation/maps that doesn’t need your phone to be connected (not the scout gps), right?
