Adding a little color to dash with the new Entune 3.0 Plus 86140-04230 head unit.

@IcemanPNW i know this post is pretty old, but curious if you have an explanation.

I have a 2018 TRD off-road, got the corresponding 2021 premium HU with nav. I keep reading about needing a donor VIN, what does that do for me? Or what do I lose if I can’t get it (eBay seller said he didn’t know)

    Hello,

I just got a head unit retro fitted but I really want the stock navigation just to have it (OCD) despite always using Apple Carplay. I wanted to inquire for those who know, can I salvage a navigation box from another unit or different Toyota model and add it to my current head unit?
Or is the receiver and navigation box paired and I would need to get the whole thing?

Im pretty sure the navigation unit is non swappable between headunit part numbers. Only certain headunit part numbers are compatible with the navigation unit. I dont think they even have the connection ports needed. Additionally i dont think its compatible across different toyota car/truck models. I do know there are some sienna headunits that fit the tacoma but swapping navigation between radio part numbers won't work.

As far as I’m aware, donor vin is only needed for using the Toyota app on your phone. Check out this video for details on the app:
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NgRLnT36Wpw

Other than getting software updates I personally find the app more than useless and I uninstalled it.

I don’t really get why Toyota or any other legacy car manufacturer would try to create their own app ecosystem.

Outside of major software driven vehicle platforms like Tesla and Rivian I don’t think these companies have the expertise or are willing to make investments necessary to do it right.

The main difference in compatibility is between Entune 2.0 nav computers and Entune 3.0 nav computers. As far as I’m aware those will not work with each other or across head units (eg 3.0 HU to 2.0 nav computer is probably not possible).

With that said, I believe (but haven’t personally verified) that the Entune 3.0 navigation computers are actually the same across a very wide range of Toyotas (Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tacoma, and Sienna).

In particular the part numbers in the range of:
    86840-0E081 … 86840-0E087
… as far as I’ve been able to tell they are in practice all the same computer, maybe there are some minor improvements, but maybe only software changes.

Of course, you do need an Entune 3.0 Premium head unit to drive the 3.0 navigation computer, it will not work with the “Plus” navigation or the Basic Audio head units, they are entirely different head units and not upgradable to use the onboard nav computer without upgrading the entire head unit.

Note: I’m not a tech or Toyota engineer, just an enthusiast; do your own research before buying or connecting anything.

So my buddy totaled his 2023 Tacoma OR, and gave me his radio, but his model is a 86140-04230 and it says it has nav, BUT if it doesn't have nav can I use the maps from my iPhone and use that through CarPlay?

Yea, that’s a so-called “Plus” head unit, it doesn’t support an onboard nav computer. The “nav” it has requires the app, you may as well use CarPlay.

CarPlay from the iPhone works just fine on “Plus” head units.

This radio will work in a 2018 Tacoma. It’s out of a 2023 Tacoma that’s from Canada.

That looks like a Premium 8” non-JBL. Presumably the exact same thing as the 86140-04200. I wonder what’s different about it if anything at all. I’m assuming it also has the built in nav computer?

There was isn’t nav in that model, I have the same exact one and my old one has a separate module below the stereo which is the nav.

Ya that’s what I meant; the nav is “built-in” to the vehicle as opposed to needing an app, phone, and internet to work.

It does seem like it is the same as 86140-04200.

I am looking for info if this will work,
I have a 2019 2.0 stereo system "without" JBL, can I swap it out with a 3.0 "with" JBL head unit? I know that the wiring wont work and will I have to get adapters.
I didnt know if the JBL amp was for the subwoofer and not the front speakers only or does it power all the speakers?
    Thank You

Personally I wouldn’t think the cost and amount of effort would be worth it.

If you’re dead set on installing a JBL head unit after the fact, talk to the guys at autoharnesshouse, I believe they’ve helped out a couple of others or at least have an idea of the adapters and parts that you’ll need. As a preview here is what they say about it on their website for the entune adapters:

If your goal is to keep an oem head unit while upgrading the sound, take a look at the subaru tweeters, the kicker speaker upgrade, and if that’s not enough, there’s always the non-JBL oemaudio+ setup (upgraded speakers, external amp, plus amplified woofer); reviews suggest that can easily beat out the JBL setup even without a JBL head unit.

I may be misreading your post, but are you CONFIRMING that this works in a 2018, or ASKING? I have a 2019 that I'm looking to upgrade and I wanted to make sure I can use either 86140-04200 or 86140-04250 before moving forward. Thanks!

    For what it’s worth I personally have the 86140-04200 in a 2019.

Can’t really speak for the 04250 but it looks like the same thing. Might be slightly different for the Canadian market?

What a wealth of information, thank you everyone. So what I gather and to put this in a nutshell, there is no rhyme or reason to what vehicle gets what radio going down the Assy. Line.

Yeah I was asking, put a period instead of a question mark. Idk I’ll find out here in 2 days when it gets here. Hopefully by the weekend I’ll have it all installed.

My new radio I got from a user on here jsut got in, I’m kinda stuck at work for the next two weeks so don’t get my hands on. But I’m assuming that small box is the nav unit. I ordered the harness without that nav, I’m assuming I messed up and should have got the harness that has the nav unit.
