I'm new here and the main reason is to ask a question from more knowledgeable people, this is my first Tacoma and it has a simple head unit not the JBL Premium, I would really like to find if I could add the JBL unit if I could find one. I really want the GPS vs a dash mount one. Phone is ok but no cell service no GPS
    TIA for any insight

I believe the JBL unit uses amps and different ohm ratings, so it’s not plug-play.
In the end, the factory nav isn’t very good.
    BTW: welcome!

Carplay/android auto has taken over, for good reason.

If you want fancy look into the android headunits. They run android and have gps built in. You can run regular android apps. They are not as polished though.

Ya don't invest into a factory nav unit, they were bad when they were new.

It's best to switch to apple carplay or android auto with an aftermarket head unit.

It's a game changer and makes the vehicle feel new again.

You can download maps to your phone and display them on the aftermarket units mentioned above.

Since I have neither I still use a Garmin Nuvi so cell doesn't matter to me. And I can take with when travelling somewhere and using a rental

Most phones will run GPS without cell signal via satellite. I’m a hiker and a fan of CalTopo but I have friends using Gaia and OnX with good results. I understand a clean dash, but my phone is an amazing tool in the field: gps, camera, journal, star chart, plant reference, and more

The "aerial view" on the stock head unit for my 2022 sucks. I still prefer the Garmin movable GPS unit that is 10 years old ... the "birds-eye" view is superior.
