I intentionally reserved posts #2 & #3 in this thread to update important relevant information making it easy for new readers to find without adding to the experiment of the original post. I've updated those posts with recent H9 test results.

Many years ago when I was getting my Six Sigma Black Belt, there were two slides the very first week of class that I'll never forget. The first one said:

" In God we trust. All others bring data."

    The other one said:

    Three rules of data analysis:
    1) Plot the data
    2) Plot the data
    3) Plot the data

I think we've seen that advice put to good use here. Nice work @crashnburn80!

So glad I got the XD Philips 4300k lights before they stopped selling them. Still need to figure out what to use for high beams though.

Been reading all the posts and now my head just popped..:boom:

On my prior 06 I replace the head lights with the spyder separate hi\lo and had H1 bulbs. And thought they were a great improvement.
Now fast forward. I am trying to get the better visibility back with my 15.

    I see 2 choices.
    - Go with the akkon (Amazon $220) assembly with separate hi\lo with H1\H7 bulbs. But not sure if the H7 will be as good as the H1's in the 06.
    - Upgrade existing housing to Projector Halogen\LED\HID ???? This is where this greasy monkey is totally lost.

Any advice on brand / vendor would be greatly appreciated.
Also the prices for the upgrade kits are all over the chart.

    Thanks:frusty:

The 2nd gen upgrade is here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-ultimate-headlight-upgrade-h4-not-led-or-hid.398066/

Otherwise there is doing a quality projector retrofit, with real HID projectors and running HID. Aftermarket housings are poor performing and not an upgrade.

Does the wiring harness need to be replaced for the additional output performance for the Hellas H9 bulbs for low beam as your findings describe in the GE + 130 H11s? Is a replacement wiring harness advised for fogs on High beams or fogs? Is there also a benefit in the upgrading the wiring harness with regards to longevity by eliminating continual heat buildup?

Good statements to go by. Best part about data is there are no opinions, just facts which actually makes the job much easier. And I couldn’t agree more on the data plotting, you should see the plotting we do at my firm.

Best known option for high beam at this time would be the Hella H9s. It is a 13% improvement. The H9 is one of the highest performing bulbs, so it is difficult to beat. Going LED won’t project as far and HID will have long warm up time. If you need more you should consider adding aux lights for high beam.

Do you have a link to those Hella bulbs. I see some on Amazon for $17 and change.

Here is where I purchased mine:
    https://www.rallylights.com/hl78178-h9-12v-65w-xenon-bulb.html

If purchasing elsewhere be sure to not get the ‘performance 2.0’ bulb, which is blue coated.

Not needed for the GEs. You can mod the extension so you don’t need to trim the H9 to fit the H11 plug if going with the Hellas. There is more info a couple pages back.

A wiring harness is not required for any of these upgrades. However it will gain you a small but non trivial improvement in output. I’d likely only consider it for the low beam since that is the primary lighting source and used far more than the others.

To further clarify, all data presented in the posts was at 13.8v, which is the measured voltage at the OEM headlight plug. Using the harness will bring that up to near battery voltage of ~14.1-14.2v (as supplied by the alternator).

The harness will run not help bulb longevity and may ever so slightly hurt it by allowing the bulbs to run at the higher voltage. Lowering voltage extends bulb life but reduces output. Before LEDs truckers used to use devices to limit the voltage to their headlights to extend service life since they are on the road non-stop.

I'm going to see if Rallylights will build a separate version of their harness, adapted with H9 plugs for the bulbs to make the Hellas a plug and play solution while running the heavier gauge harness. More output + plug and play solution with no bulb modification = WIN.

That'd be pretty awesome. I have GE +130s that I'm about to install but figure if I can just run 4x Hella H9s with two on harness in the LB spot.. easier to just have a few replacements in the glovebox :)

Not to nit-pick, but I think you mean alternator voltage. A battery at steady state with the vehicle off will supply 12 volts. The alternator runs at a greater voltage to charge the battery. OF course a DVM will detect greater than 12 volts at the battery when the engine is running for that reason. Never mind ...

Correct, voltage measured across the battery terminals with the vehicle running which is of course voltage supplied by the alternator. I added a clarifying comment to the previous post.
