Here’s a head scratcher. In a pinch I had Minit-Man perform an engine oil change for me. My 2017 OR TRD Taco’s odo is just shy of 80K. They performed an engine flush service. After the flush was complete they asked me to turn my engine on for a few minutes. Following they asked me to turn my engine off. After I shut my engine off my truck went into an idle state where it almost felt like the cab was rumbling. I had to turn my engine on with my push start and the engine turned on as usual. The tech asked me to turn my truck on and off again, the idle occurred again after I hit my push start to turn off the truck. One again I turned my engine on with the push start and then back off and the engine shut off per usual. The tech then drained my engine fluid, changed the oil & filter, service complete. After the service they asked me to turn my vehicle on once more and the truck was on per usual. I turned my truck off and the idle didn’t occur again. I drove home and the truck turned off as expected, no more idling. I asked the manager of the Minite-Man and he said he had only seen that happen once and it was yesterday with a 4Runner. He said maybe they will do a recall, blah blah. I asked the tech who performed the service and he said he’d never seen that happen before. They suggested if it happens again to take a video and show the dealership.

I usually do my own oil changes and I knew it was a bad idea to take it and have someone else do it for me. I told the manager and the tech that it had never happened before and they had no answer as to what could have caused this issue to occur.

    What do you guys think?

They stated the engine flush service was an additive they add to the engine oil and let the engine run for 10 min and then they dump the oil.

I thought the same thing. I disregarded that comment. He said the issue that happened with my truck happened with a 4Runner yesterday. Then later he repeated the story but said a Toyota Corolla lol.

I'm hoping I just can't read. They did a flush and asked you to run the truck with no oil, and it idles bad?

they did a flush where they empty a small amount of oil out and add a flushing fluid and have you run the engine for 10 min and then turn it off. This is where my engine would idle when I hit the start/stop button to turn off my engine.

After the flush they emptied my engine oil and replaced the filter and oil. My truck did not repeat the issue where it would idle after the engine was turned off.

When the issue was occurring the engine and truck were not idling normally. It was rumbling/shaking.

Thanks for clarification. I'd reach back out to them and ask what product they added in for the "flush", and do some research from there. Sounds like whatever it was, the truck didn't like it, and running rough isn't a great sign.

The odd thing was that the problem occurred when the engine was “shut off” via the start/stop button.

After the old oil/flushing fluid was drained and the new filter & oil were added the engine acted normal.

Don't let folks do your oil changes, esp shitty quick lube places. Synthetics do not coke up and need a flush. In my experience, we have had only one engine with build up. I believe the previous owner used dino or a synthetic blend on that HP turbo motor.

What likely happened since no fuel was being injected is that the kerosene that they poured into your crankcase was venting through the EGR or PCV and dieseling without spark. Another thing to not do again.

Admittedly, I'm not very educated on the topic; but I don't see that putting any kind of chemicals or fluid in my engine besides the fluids it calls for would be a good idea. If its running great now, maybe just do an oil change sooner than you normally would to get that remaining crap out, and call it a lesson learned.

The stuff is typically a solvent, like kerosene, so even if there was some remnants after the oil change, it would have evaporated once the new oil got to temperature.

I’m agree. They gave me the snake oil salesman trick and I fell into it today. Regrettably.

Thanks for the info. I should have turned the service down but fell into it today. I’m close to 80K so I felt like “hey why would it hurt?” Then the issue occurred lol

Well that's good to hear; I'd still opt for an earlier than normal oil change just get any knocked loose sludge out of there (assuming it did its job).

Believe me, I had a bad feeling about going & still went when I knew I should have done the service myself.

Thanks for the insight. Everything seems to be acting normal. I hope it continues to perform as usual.

I’m about to hit 80K and didn’t have the trans fluid changed because I’m worried about someone doing the service & running into issues later. Today’s experience has me even more worried.

I’m confused. So you’re saying you hit the start/stop button to turn off your engine, however the truck was still running?

That is exactly what happened. Hit the stop button and the truck felt like it was shaking/rumbling. Hit the brake/start button again and the truck started up & sounded/felt normal.

    You're welcome!

I wouldn't sweat it, but like you are, take it as a lesson learned.

What you felt was diesling as @tonered defined. Also called 'run on' on days of yore. Not too uncommon on carbruated vehicles, usually related to ignition timing

Curious how this happens in any PCM based EFI setup. @tonered may have hit it though.......

The good news is it's unlikely any harm was done, other than your wallet and pride.:D

    $65.00 service ☠️

Thanks for the insight! I’ve only started/stopped my truck a dozen times after the service just to make myself feel better about everything still “working” properly lol

I’m so mad at myself that I washed my truck for the first time in maybe 12-16 months lol. I’m trying to tell myself I’m still a good Taco owner lol
