I am looking at trading in my 2011 Tacoma PreRunner for a 4x4 truck. I was looking at some 2014, and 2015 Tacomas. But it seems like I can get a new 2017 Tacoma SR5 for not much more.

I was staying away because of the issues I keep hearing the 3rd gen owners are having. I normally keep a vehicle for 10+ years, and was really hoping to keeping what ever truck I buy for 15 years+. The only reason I am selling my current Tacoma is because I keep wanting a 4X4.

Take a good test drive, zero problems with my 17. I traded a 2015 for it no regrets

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
Yeah I would say test drive the exact truck you are buying thoroughly and know what to look for. FWIW mine has rumble strip vibes and dif howl but It's not something I would get rid of it over.

Get glass insurance. Seems as though the windshields are fragile and expensive. Otherwise no other issues for me that haven't been solved ie. Transmission shifting issue TSB.
I love this little truck! I hope it lasts as long as all the others that are still on the road!

There's issues with every generation of Tacoma, including your 11. Decide if wanting a 4X4 is that important to you to "take that risk".

I understand what you are saying. So the question is, Should I "take the risk" with a 3rd gen or stay with a 2nd gen. Seems like you guys are happy with your 3rd gen Tacomas.

Very happy with mine and no issues-keep your 2011 unless you absolutely need 4x4 just my opinion since you asked....

Drive a 3rd gen and see how you like it.

New truck means full warranty in case you think you might have issues. You can also get the color and configuration you want as they're readily available.

If you're worried about longetivity or reliability of the 3rd gen then keep driving your 11 for a few more years and see.

Or you can stay with what you know and find a low mileage 2nd gen.

You are making a very good point. I might just have to keep my truck. It runs good and I am happy with it. I just really "want" a 4x4. I don't need it since I live in Socal. We get no snow and almost no rain :)

had my 17 sport 6 speed MANUAL TRANS for 5 days, I love it. If you do decide to upgrade, I suggest the manual trans, it takes care of a few of the issues folks are having.

No issues here with my '17, I really like it.

I don't get the "risk" part. It's got a warranty so if you like the truck when you drive it and it does not do that reliably for you after the sale - it gets fixed. If it doesn't get fixed and you lawyer up - it gets lemoned. It's also the highest resale in the market so if you are unhappy with your decision around this time in 2018 ... you can get out with minimal butthurt if you don't tart it all up or crash it.

If it makes you happy - why not?

Now that i have a'17, i should've waited till all the interest calms down, i ordered one and the dealer saw me coming from a country mile away! MSRP was the only "DEAL" they would offer. They did throw in mud flaps tho, so i guess i really did show they after all. ;-)

    Keep your 2011.

Why take an expensive risk with a 3rd gen with deplorable reliability?

Would love a manual, but the wife can't drive manual. I own a 6 speed sports car and she refuses to drive it.

Deplorable? that's hardly the case but you're entitled to your opinion since it's based on your 1st hand experience reading TW

well I have to agree, but it is not with Toyota, its with this forum. All the info about how bad the turd gen Taco that I got from here is deplorable, I am still waiting for mine to blow up.

Well that could also be an advantage. Honestly, if it wasn't for the manual, I am not sure I what I would be driving. When we replaced my wife's car last time, VW took its self out, as they didn't have the manual but insisted the Triptonic (sp) was the same thing.
