The only "concern" I would have with the 3rd gen is reading all the bs here. Much of which comes from non 3rd gen owners who don't know what they're talking about.

Really should talk about what you know and not what you read on the INTERNET....even though everything on the internet is 100% true!

I traded my 2011 OR A/T for a 2017 TRD PRO A/T, I think the 2017 is actually better built overall, very tight and quiet in cabin with all the latest technology. Suspension is amazing, the toyota 4 wheel drive system is top of the line. No issues at all with quality in my mind and engine has plenty of power in the higher rpm range which makes it almost seem like a turbo engine. You just have to drive it the way you want, there are 3 modes - grandpa eco mode has the younger guys upset for sure which is what you hear the most about. Iam happy with this truck. I think you will like the ride on the 4x4 suspensions better based on reviews.

Look at a previous inquiry done here, Almost 75% of the responders indicated that they don't have any issues. The rest are the louder minority. I have been truly enjoying my 2017, completely trouble free. Don't let others ruin the enjoyment that you are seeking.
Be your own decision maker, it will be good in later life.

I definitely get that from all the responses. I am going to analyze this a little more, this time with the wife and our finances. :)
If I don't go with a 3rd get, it wont be because they aren't reliable, it will be because it's not in the budget.

Just test drive it thoroughly before buying a 3rd gen. If you do not like the way it shifts don't buy it. Please.

You don't sound happy with your 3rd gen?

    I have never driven a 3rd gen.

I am very happy with my truck. I just don't get people that buy them and immediately start griping about the shifting. Drive it before you buy one.

Yes! and OP- if it's a question of financing, keep the 2011- I remember reading that after about 8 years of ownership, the vehicle is essentially "free". You are only 3 years away from that.
Good luck and enjoy that 2011 or whatever you decide on!

Bought my 2017 last month and it has been great. Gas mileage is great with the auto trans and 6 cyl. I didn't see that much in price difference between a newer 2nd gen and a 17. with a 3rd gen you are getting the newest technology and the highest hp engine. If you have negotiating skills you can get a 2017 under invoice.

Thanks! I wish I could wait 3 more years. But a 4x4 Tacoma keeps calling my name.

Might have to settle for a used 2nd gen 4x4 though. I have contacted 4 dealers on the 2017s and nobody wants to negotiate. They are telling me they can't keep these trucks on the lot. No new 2016s 4x4 trucks either. Damn Southern California.

    I traded my 07 2nd gen 4 banger 5 speed 4 x4 bought in 07 for a 3rd gen sport v6 auto 4x4 and no regrets. Better ride,better mpg's and power,better options and 0 issues! And got a great trade in on the 07!

You need to drive it in the different modes if looking at an auto transmission to see how you like it as it's different than previous trucks. Transmission in D will try to be the most fuel efficient where it will try to keep the rpms low to conserve gas, I consider this like an ECO mode even though the shifter is in D. S4 keeps it out of the overdrive gears and gives a bit more lower end grunt, even more so with ECT engaged. S5 makes the truck respond like a 5 speed similar to your 2011, S6 is pretty much like D (ECO mode) where it uses the higher gears as much as possible.

Most people want D to respond like all other trucks and cars they've driven and that's where people begin to complain about the constant shifting to stay in low rpms, lethargic response when giving it gas because the transmission has to kick down to accelerate or else feel a lack of low end. It might take some getting used to at first but if you understand how it works and experiment with the different modes, it becomes a pretty nice performing platform that goes like hell when you mash the throttle.

Don't be afraid to play with it on the test drive and drive a few of them.

If you like how it drives then consider buying one. If it's too different than what you're used to and you don't want to use different modes in different circumstances keep your 2011 or buy a 4X4 2nd gen.

There more tech in a 3rd Gen, different engine setup (no superchargers), and less aftermarket (for now). If there isn't anything wrong with your 2ND gen then I'd keep it. But if your looking to have a new vehicle anyways then I'd go 3rd Gen.
