TBH, I never liked the 2nd gen when they came out, or I would have bought one. I went through many a vehicle before deciding to go BACK to Toyota. Appears it was a mistake to wait for the 3rd gen for myself anyhow.

I doubt they lost much in sales, they're selling everything they can make. They will sell more or raise the price of the '17 because based on the way my '16 is working...Like a dream...It's looking great so far!

    Hope that helps!
    Cheers!

There were lots of complaints on the 2nd gen back when I joined. Squeaky blower motors, squeaky leaves, weak motor mounts, erratic shifting especially with cruise control, take off vibes, weak rear e-locking diffs. I'm sure I could think of more but you get the point. I still love my truck despite its faults because it has always been dependable when and where it counts.

Japanese-built trucks weren't perfect but they sure seemed a lot less trouble prone. Thing is the trucks from 1979 to 1995 were also a lot simpler and harder to screw up. They had one computer, a wiring harness that didn't have 100 wire bundles, mostly mechanical systems.

A better comparison would be the number of recalls or TSBs the 4Runner has now compared to the Tacoma. I don't know how they compare, but they share a lot of common design but the component engineering and manufacturing is not. So is it fundamentally a domestic quality control thing or is it corporate wide trying to stay profitable.

Probably would be best to have the Mods create a sticky with a "Bitching Superthread" (you can name it something else to soften the language) AND have the Mods create a sticky with a "Love My Truck" or ""Love My Truck - No Problems" thread where people can post comments like:

Poster 1: Got my truck last week - love it - no problems.

Poster 2: Same thing here dude - 200 miles and no problems.

Poster 3: Just driving mine off the lot after buying it - no problem yet!!! Love it!

A truck that new, well I would fricking hope so...

Anyways, it would clean up the forums quite a bit and focus thing more on what the 1st gen and 2nd gen forums have become.

Not sure what is agenda behind:)... But I own 10 4Runner, bought brand new in 2010, my wifes daily. It's lifted with 285s about 63*** miles. Only problem I had is drive shaft was replaced under TSB. Other than that zero problems, drives like new everyday!

Edit: I should add that if I didn't push on DS replacement I'm sure it would of been fine until today. All what it did is slight knocking sound at complete stop.

I have no doubt that the Japanese Toyotas are top notch, I just don't have a reference for it since my Tacoma replaced a Japanese-made 1991 that went 300K and was still a fine run-about (sold it at the end of 2015 and it's doing commercial landscape work now).

I did get a recall notice on it in or around 2006 for a defective steering relay rod. I had this image of a bunch of Toyota engineers standing around a few failed ones thinking "Damn, we thought for sure these would last 20 years. Well, bring them all back in." My relay rod was drilled out a Total Chaos idler so it didn't get the replacement and alignment under the recall and it never broke anyway.

I bought one of the last 2nd gens last September from off the lot, just as the dealer was waiting for his 2016 inventory to arrive. I had the money so I paid cash and received $2000 cash back off of MSRP. They included a bunch of other stuff like undercoating and sealer to make me feel like a privileged customer. It was a pretty good deal, on a known quantity. the truck has been perfect since then, but I haven't put a whole lot of miles on it yet. It just rolled up to 16K km. I pull a horse trailer with it, and gave it TRD Pro lift. It does what I want it to do and its fantastic to drive. Almost as much fun at high speed on big roads as off road. Time will tell, but if anyone has second thoughts about a 3rd gen, they should consider a 2015 2nd gen, in my opinion they are completely bomb proof.

Who did the labor on your lift install? What parts supplier did you use?

I think stuff gets extremely magnified on forums like this. The vast # of buyers are probably perfectly happy; it's only when something occasionally goes wrong that people start searching the internet for answers. Then you have the thin-skinned die hard fans of the nameplate who reside here at all times and who are quickly triggered to take offense at any an all criticism of their cherished ride, and the magnification is intensified with hostility.

Sure makes it seem like you are thinking of buying a freakin' time bomb when you read it all and if you lack a certain perspective.

Having said that, what a great time we live in when we have the ability to gather so much information before making such a big purchase. My first car was back in the dark ages, when there was next to nothing other than a couple of car mags that maybe had a spread on what you were interested in. Absolutely nothing about common problems, how-to's, reliability, etc. and cars then were unimaginable pieces of sh!t compared to modern vehicles. That first car of mine broke down and left me stranded up and down the east coast too many times to remember, and rusted into oblivion after just a few years in the northeast (a Datsun 240Z, BTW...)! Now, despite a couple of very minor issues, I have absolute confidence my G2 taco will live 3X longer than that first POS and never let me down. The same I'm certain can easily be said about G3. Super-rare is the true "lemon" these days, especially if it's a a new taco.

Other than the widely reported issues with the new transmission/engine, which you should decide for yourself if it suits you, I think this place is great for arming us with the knowledge to take a thorough test drive of the actual vehicle you plan to buy before you pull the trigger. Make sure there is no vibrations, noises, squeaks, loud diff, odd shifting, or any other issue pointed out here BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF THE LOT. 99/100 tacos are probably perfectly fine. Do that and you should have no worries at all.

Mostly agree, though some of the squeaks and howling issues (rear diff) are not popping up on the trucks until 6k miles, 10k miles, etc.

There's truth to that @Sheepshead45. Almost no one goes on the forums just to say I've got 40K and no trouble.

Hi smitty99, I couldn't get the TRD Pro parts in Canada, because that model isn't sold in Canada, so I bought them from Fucillo Toyota, just across the border from Niagara Falls in New York State. They are probably upper NY States biggest Toyota dealer, and their parts guy just looked up the part listing, placed the order and the kit came in a few days later.
It was winter, and pretty cold at the time (January) so I decided to have the parts installed by someone other than me. The best shop in the greater Toronto area, not too far from where I live, is CT Motorsports, and its nice to be able to give a shout out to Ski, the shop proprietor. I like doing my own labour, in general, but when its cold outside and you don't have a warm shop, Ski is a great option and luxury.
