Hey guys, long time lurker and just joined. First time Tacoma owner and was just wondering if any other members have had any of the issues I’ve encountered with my truck. Bought extended warranty and had no issues until truck hit 140000 miles. At that time factory entune radio completely went silent and around same time driver door actuator quit working. Not much of a mechanic but replaced door actuator and still won’t work. Had shop down the road check it and their tech said he thought it may be wiring harness related but alas I thought I’d live with it. I usually put around 3000 miles a month on the truck and it has been serviced per Toyota maintenance schedules but the last few days it has really been acting up. After driving it for around the first three hours of my day then it will begin surging and idling horribly as if it’s trying to die out. Trying to turn the truck off at the point it’s idling so horribly will only allow it to sit their and continue to sputter even worse until I start it back up. At this point it begins throwing PO172 and PO175 codes up on my scanner indicating system is running too rich on bank 1 and 2. Also throwing the TRAC off light and CEL. Anyhow the roads on my daily route are very dusty and my truck eats air filters alive, so I replaces air filter and cleaned maf sensor which still looked brand new. Also replaced spark plugs. Ran truck for two weeks after that and all was good as far as I could tell but then once again began throwing the same codes and running badly except this last time it threw the codes it also threw a P117B code indicating Fuel performance/direct injector code. At this point I killed truck and it would not restart, just idle roughly a few seconds and die. Two hours of letting it sit and cool down and then I got it to start and drove 30 miles home with no issues. However it continues to throw the codes if I drive it over two hours and does the same thing. Took it to a pretty reputable mechanic down the road and he looked it over and could not tell me anything. I know my first post is long but I’m at a loss as to what the problem could be…..Toyota recommends fuel injector replacement at 150000 miles and o2 sensor replacements at every 60000 miles. This would be the first time I’ve ever heard of this as I’ve driven many makes and models well over those mileage limits with no issues. However pricing the maf at 300 to 600 dollars just for the sensor and 800 for all 4 o2 sensors seems outrageous.

welcome aboard... did you change the oil and filter every 5000/ 6 months?

I know Toyota recommends 10,000...something about that just don't compute...synthetic oil or not.

No, per factory recommended 10000 miles, always checked oil and it still looked pretty good considering I’ve went that many miles. Mother in law has had two Rav 4 and followed that schedule as I have with 2014 tundra with no issues.

Toyota does not recommend that stuff, there recommended maintained stops a 120k and doesn't mention O2 sensors, never seen that stuff posted here. Could be a fuel pump issue, was it ever changed?

We have a 2016 trds and my 2017 where I work and a 2018, all three have had enough issues that it really scares me to death seeing what comes next. The 2016 and 2018 both shattered retaining clips for radiator and condenser which left them pretty much stranded as they leaked out from radiators. 2016 got traded as that problem and front suspension and factory brakes completely went out at around same time with 40000 miles. 2018 rear end went out at 50000 and had an issue where he had a electrical short and truck would just stop driving as it said brake and gas pedal where pressed simultaneously.

How much time do you spend on dusty roads?

Fuel pump was never changed on mine as it didn’t fall under recall for some reason even though every year before and after does. Coolant and oil look fine as far as I can tell and I had dealership preform coolant change and tranny fluid changed at 100000 as recommended. Not really enough of a mechanic to perform compression test and just haven’t had time to take it to have it done.

Compression test is pretty easy, if you can change plugs you can do a compression test. If you spend a lot of time on dusty roads your supposed to do a 5k oci per the manual.

What do you guys use these trucks for at work? Sounds like they are getting beat to death. They should still last, but a more stringent maintenance plan is likely called for.

I’m on some dusty roads when it gets dry here in Oklahoma however most of my driving is mainly around 25-30 miles an hour on oil field lease roads. I probably drive 3 miles a day on dusty roads but I do stay on top of air filter changes as I’ve seen the effect it’s had on vehicles. Keep my truck almost showroom clean inside and out every chance I get, at least once a week. The rest of my mileage is pretty much highway or gravel roads.

Think daily driving on dusty roads pushes you to a 5k oci, you should do a compression test as a start.

We had two second gen Tacoma’s out there that went 180000 to 200000 with no maintenance other than oil changes. Never even changed the factory spark plugs. Was hoping these 3rd gen would be just as reliable

also 100k is to long for trans fluid, you should do a drain and fill every 60k. did the dealer change the transmission filter?
