Tacoma newb here, trying to locate a 2018/2019 Long Bed, Manual Trans, Off Road and am starting to wonder if they even exist? Tons of double cabs but not access cabs.

    Is this a unicorn combo?

    Thanks!

Long bed does not exist in a manual when you have the double cab, access only or short bed.

Right so I'm technically looking for an access cab, manual, off road edition. Was that combo not popular or are owners of that combo just not selling?

Access cab manuals are only available in the TRD Sport in the US. Canada had the TRD OR access cab manual.

Thanks. That explains why I can't find that combo in the US, bummer. Not sure if I can stomach an auto transmission :/

The ACLB Sport is very capable. I have had wheels off the ground and still had forward progress. The only difference that I have noticed is that ORs get more help at a lower RPM. The vacuum boosted system needs some revs to engage.

Without mods, the OR locker only engages in 4Lo and from a full stop. So, there is that unfortunate limitation.

I've seen stuck ORs and stuck Sports. No driveline stuff was getting us going.

That said, if we had the option here, I would have gotten an ACLB OR MT. The LB was more important to me. Filled it hauling and it is where I sleep.

    Appreciate the details.

I'm not a huge fan of the looks of the 2nd gen which I've seen with that combo, so may go 2003/2004 but hard to find in decent shape.

Car industries are slowly forcing us to auto transmissions which is a shame.

Not sure I understand the resistance here...
Buy a Sport, then toss an ARB locker in the rear (maybe one in the front too, while you're at it). Like said, you'll have a much greater control over that locker as well (you can use it in 4x4-HI or 2WD even, and it won't automatically disengage when you go over 30 MPH or however fast it is). You probably can get a Sport for cheaper than the Off Road (had it existed) too, That savings will help pay for the ARB.

I originally wanted an Off Road myself, but looking back, I've actually been thinking that having been forced into a Sport with it's much simpler vacuum-assist braking system was actually a good thing (although I do wish I could get rid of the hill-hold assist thing on inclines that the OR & Pro don't have).

Assuming you are referring to the difference between TRAC and A-TRAC, I have to strongly disagree. I think there is very big difference between the two.

I do however think you might be right that the vacuum booster could suffer more at low rpm.

Keep in mind that A-TRAC can be disabled in order to use TRAC instead and this implies there are firmware differences between the two as well. I think of TRAC as on-road traction control and A-TRAC as off-road traction control.

I also don’t consider the 4lo locker restriction to be an issue. If I’m in a situation where I want the locker, I’m already in 4lo as it’s near impossible to get over an obstacle in 4hi with a 6MT. Also, the locker provides only a slight advantage over A-TRAC and is very situational.

I was under the impression that the access cab only came in a long bed...

    Cheers

I'm a bit of a stock purist hence the desire for OE rear lockers. In any case, thanks for the idea!!
