I haven’t heard of a single failure or breakage, so I’d say the transmission itself is pretty dang reliable. Some folks have throwout bearing or clutch issues. But I don’t know of any transmission issues except the earlier models needing a different detent or something to fix the shifts on one of the gears. That problem was fixed early on with a TSB.

Well of course, and I touched on the clutches and throwout bearings a bit, but he was asking about the transmission specifically, or at least that's how the post was worded. I wasn't going to dive into the other potential failures. I have not seen an actual manual transmission failure itself posted about here on the forum.

I've owned nothing but manual transmission 4x4 Toyotas since 1982. I have never had a transmission issue. The motor gave out at 311,000 on my 1994 but never an issue with the transmissions. 40K on my 2020. Hoping this trend continues.

Hard to answer that. Seen quite a few posted here failing at anywhere from 20-50K, and plenty that are cresting 150-200K and still fine. Probably depends on a number of factors like how good the driver is and I’m sure some of them are just faulty and the friction material doesn’t hold up like it’s supposed to.

My 2nd gen MT was better but the 3rd gen isn’t bad. The clutch just feels a little mushy, other than that it shifts fine and I haven’t had any problems.

average clutch life is a tough calc. I occasionally skip gears, rarely engine brake and keep my left foot on the dead pedal and hands off the shift knob when not needed. My last 2nd gen Tacoma had 80k on the odometer on the original clutch when I traded in. My ‘93 Toyota truck had 108k on the original clutch when I traded that in. It also had the original drum brakes. YMMV.

this is not my experience. my 3rd gen shifts significantly smoother and the clutch feel is better than my 2nd gen. YMMV

Without context, that photo doesn’t tell me anything. The only quill problems I know of exist on 2nd gens. And that may be a 2nd gen transmission in the photo but I haven’t done any googling to look and they aren’t what the thread is about. So again, what am I supposed to be concerned about here?

Is it the lack of pilot bearing that leads you to say it was “made wrong”?

I feel like it felt more “raw” which is what I like in MTs. Maybe it’s the low end torque which is lacking a little more in the 3rd gen’s.
