Toyota all weather floor mats. Mag light that clunks around in the jack compartment. Dog hair. Dog drool on the windows.
Don't be confused, The thread title asked what I would want to see.
and that's what I would like to see in the 3rd generation of Tacoma's.
I hope someone at corporate will hear my cries.

    Diesel engine would be great!

It would be awesome if Toyota shocked the industry and offered a diesel in the 3rd Gen. Tacoma.

With fuel prices still trending upward now would be the time to do it. I heard on the news last night that it's predicted that gas will be ~$5 a gallon in less than a year. I know it just a guess for these economists. However it sure would be nice to have a fuel miser diesel Tacoma to help cut operating costs!

With the slew of “new” technologies being deployed by other manufactures such as direct injection, twin turbos, dual variable valve timing (which I still can’t believe the Tacoma doesn’t have yet), electric power steering and dual clutch transmissions. Toyota needs to step up quickly and start adapting some of these technologies in their main stay products, like the Tacoma.

To put the Tacoma back on the map so to speak, downsizing back to 1st gen size would be a must. it would then own the category. A diesel engine is also a must and redo the cam profiles in the gas engines to get some reasonable mileage. A solid front axle likely isn't in the cards but locking hubs rather than the current system would be great and make limited slip standard equipment. I never buy new but once a truck like that gets to be 10 years old, I'm all over it.

I just want some basic items added:

    Cruise Control on all models

Intermittent Wipers on all models (come on, sheez)

Fog light indicator for models that have them or can be added to

    Lighted window roll down/up buttons

These are things that should be standard, the temp/compass console could stay as part of a package as well as other items, but these need to be standard.

Meh I guess the things I want could and should be part of an upgrade package, except the lighted window buttons and the indicator.

I have to dissagree on the outside temperature and compass feature, they should be standard on all Tacomas IMO.

The outside temp gauge is standard on most Toyota models including basic cars like the corolla.

Ok, add the temp/compass console to my list of wants :) I think you are right on this one. Our base model Corolla does have the temp display around the gauges area, no compass though.

+1. With a small diesel, Toyota could petentially capture two markets with one model. The market for a small diesel work truck is wide open. Mahindra tried to capture it, but failed due to their third world buffoonery. The market for small fuel efficient commuter vehicles is also pretty open right now.
I hope they go this route, whether it's the Tacoma or a new model.

Has there ever been a successor in model name that's smaller than the previous generation? I can't think of one. You know the 3rd generation will be bigger, more fragile, more expensive and heavier. That's just the trend.

Maybe they could come out with a 3rd truck model in the compact size. Similar to the first generation in size. Name it the Toy. :)

I'll put in some realistic options for the U.S. spec models.
    (in order of importance)

    -Heated side mirrors
    -Rear Cargo Light
    -Leather
    -Rear window defrost

These are all options on the Frontier. I don't want a bunch of crazy shit I just want Toyota to match the competition.

Auto windows up and down. Better seat adjustments up and down. Heated external mirrors. Rear window electric open/close. Gas door pull cable open or a lock on door. Stronger tail gate. Auto cabin temp control.
