It doesn't.. already tried a while back. Only way to update the map is with the new factory SD card.

On the plus side, you can get one super cheap by paying a visit to your local Toyota dealer, and thoroughly inspecting a new 2017 vechile... Or so I'm told.

 

maps on my 2017 are out of date from road projects completed 3-4 years ago. so don't hold your breathe on an update making it much better

 

Load whatever maps you got then go to your nearest dealership and "try it out" lol worst thing is that Toyota techs get to work on a brand new "dealership" truck haha.

 

OK, Tacoma Nav headunits use a USiD with a unique SID USBTrans number, which seems to be a version the the base 10 Luhn algorithim (https://planetcalc.com/2464/) - I could be wrong as I only have 2 working cards with which to test. I think the chances of getting topo maps are very, very low to zero on the built in Navigation head units with JBL, haven't tried on a JBL.

I'm betting on zero chance of topo maps, without hacking the firmware of the headunit. Even trying to copy a good card won't work as the SID seems to be tied to the size of the card, the data, name, manufacturer, file creation date, total data size and the release date. I've tried copying a "known good card" to several cards and had zero luck at all.

 

Yeah, I tried formatting my current 2016 card and writing a .img file made from a 2017 card to it, and it still wouldn't work... Had to use my backup img to get back to working copy.

Yes, it's funky. I'm almost certain there's a way to change the SID via Luhn to get it to 'work' but I've tried a lot of numbers with no luck.

Also, the Luhn algorithm is the same used for Lowes coupons ... cough/cough
