I'll take this 7th-8th and last time to explain something for ya (in this same thread even), that others have also explained to you.

J shift has no bearing whether or not you have ADD or manual hubs.

J shift, is just a transfer case that allows you to switch from 2H to 4H to 4L and back.

J shift, when shifted to 4H, sends a signal to the ADD actuator on the front differential, to engage/disengage.

Push button transfer case, when the button is pressed to engage 4H, sends a signal to the ADD actuator on the front differential, to engage/disengage, just like a J shift.

With that being said, you engage your front diff/cv axles on a manual hub setup, by turning the dials to the locked position.

Having done this, doesn't mean you're in 4x4 though.

You still have the transfer case you need to interact with, to tell the vehicle you want 4x4, and engage the front drive shaft to provide power to the front differential.

Lol, gentlemen. My apologies for my absence!

My fiancée came to visit from June - Aug. With being in the military, I do not get to see here for such an extended period of time as this, so I gave her my full attention.

    Updates:
Not much tbh, just trying to learn as much as possible about the truck. Did my first oil change Friday :dancingbacon: and now I am battling other things here and there.

Going to start prepping parts and I still have one friend on the hunt for a transmission. If anyone has any leads, please send them to me faster than a bullet train. I am tired of these plastic crates of parts in my house.

    No worries.

Two maybe three other members started and already finished a swap for the short time you were gone. :burp:

Geesh, it sucks not having a garage and a dedicated place to work. :annoyed: If you have their threads that would be great!

    No garage here either (yet).

I'm sure the thread will pop up, but one of them made a build thread in the wrong section.

It's just finding the right parts.

    Yo Mac!

I'm in the middle of my 4x4 conversion on my 04 Tacoma (shares the same transmission). Transmissions are very hard to come by for a decent price nowadays. You've got a few options for transmissions:

    • Find a 4x4 transmission out of a 2003-2004 Tacoma
    • Find a 4x4 transmission out of a 1996-2002 Tacoma/4Runner and swap the valve body with the one out of your original transmission
    • Convert your transmission to a 4x4 by swapping the output shaft and the tail housing (take it to a shop to have it done)

I originally was going to convert mine, then found a good deal on a tranny out of a 2002, then ended up ultimately buying one out of an 04 with a J-shift TC already attached, which will make my swap 10x easier since my OG TC was out of a 2000. Plus I liked having the parts out of one truck.

Since I have purchased everything needed to go through with each of these options, they have all been the same price. They all have their pros & cons: swapping 1 for 1 is definitely easiest, while swapping valve bodies isn't hard it is time consuming and then pulling your trans and dropping it off at the shop just takes time, and I personally don't like waiting for someone else to get my project done.

Hope this gives you some ideas to help get your transmission issue sorted.

Also my thread is the one @Kwikvette was mentioning, link below:

Yeah man, you're more then welcome to! Honestly it's really not that hard of a swap (so far), if you can bolt on a few things you can definitely do this.

The hardest part is just finding all the parts you need. Every time I thought I had something for the front I realized I'd need something else. :spending:

Finally, my first question in a long time! I’m wanting to repaint my hubs black with a red center. I’m planning on soaking the left two pieces in paint thinner (once I remove the o ring). My question is for the piece on the right, should I remove the inside bits or just cover it with painters tape and paint?

    Thanks!

Page 6 of this thread, I posted a ton of pictures for you - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-or-4x4-conversion.691654/page-6#post-24630878

The hub body doesn't get painted at all, and yes you disassemble further to clean everything out. You need to check for excessive wear on the pawl and clutch.

Disassembled the other hub to get to the paintable parts and removed the o ring on both. Should I soak them in soap and water before the paint thinner or will it have the same result?
