Buying my brother's '12 TRD OR to add as an offroad/adventure vehicle. West coast vehicle, no rust.

33" tires needs about a 4" lift from what I'm reading? Drivetrain I'm aware is pretty stout. He's done all the regular maintenance and taken excellent care of the truck. At 110k miles is there anything that regularly starts creeping up I should be planning on dealing with?

Plan is lift and 33's, F/R bumpers and winch. Already has good rock rails on it, along with on board air and some other small stuff. As time goes on, and we figure out what we're doing with it, I'll add gears and a front locker. No intention going up to 35's at this point, but gears if the truck starts getting heavy with all the add-ons

Suspension wise, is it sort of a "build what you like" deal like the 3rd gens or is there specific kits that the 2nd gen community likes?

I've got skinny 33s on FJ wheels, they fit fine with my (roughly) 2 inch lift. Granted I don't really wheel or air down into the teens. My truck is mostly a highway snow rig for getting to the ski hill safely in storms. At most I'll air down to the low 20s, maybe a slight rub at full lock

As far as maintenance is concerned I'd just keep changing the oil, and look around underneath from time to time. 110k is just getting broken in

For lift kits I went with ICON stage 1 (I hate saying stage), no reservoirs, pretty basic. But I did add icon ucas for better tracking on highway. Leafs are currently squeaky ass dakars that I can't wait to get rid of. Looking at Deavers soon..

I'll be shooting for 33 x 10.5, and often do air down quite a bit, so I'll keep all that in mind, thanks.

Uh oh, It’s the “rainbow” guy. :boink:

Keep an eye on the SAIS. If you don’t have emissions where you live.
You might look into the Hewitt-Tech kit should you ever have problems.

Other than that, you got yourself a good truck.

Welcome to the 2nd Gen forum :)

You don’t need a 4 inch lift for 33s, a 2 inch lift is plenty, your suspension will cycle through its travel so you need to make room no matter what for the 33s. It’s not hard and minimal work to make them fit.
Suspension is all the same 2005 to 2023, Toyota is cutting edge like that.

    Fair enough.
I will admit, a jeep can go place a Tacoma can’t……..if it’s running.

And I have owned a Jeep. So I can’t say much.

The mid model TJ's with the 4.0 and the AX15 manual were just as reliable as anything toyota ever built. They were damn solid, and you could rebuild one on the side of the road with a couple wrenches and a hammer if you needed to. The earlier jeeps and later jeeps........yah, just...yah.

Didn't cost you a million bucks to put a TJ on 35's either. *cough cough* you listening Toyota???

That 4.0 was a great engine.
I don’t know why, but I’ve always liked the XJ.
Never owned one, but I have family members that do.

    I had a Grand Cherokee w/318

I air down my E rated 33x10x17” to 18 psi and never had issues. Been on some nasty terrain for many miles. Love my skinnies.

Due to their wheelbase they smoke the short base Tacoma in some cases.

Application is everything, isn't it? My area around here, a short bed pickup can do everything I need it to do. But a TJ on 35's can basically do everything --except carry a bunch of gear in comfort over long distances. Well, it can, but you're spending more money than you want to do so.

I bought a Jeep new in 1988 when I joined the navy out of high school. I did almost zero maintenance for 4 years, never had any issues.
My buddy has a Gladiator and he’s had no issues so far, been 2 years now.
